NBA superstars and fans have been trolling Noah Lyles for quite some time
Noah Lyles gained popularity among Americans for his impressive performances on the track at the Paris Olympics. However, he became even more well-known among NBA fans after he criticized the league for calling its champions “world champions.” Following Team USA’s gold medal win, Lyles found himself the target of online trolling. Amid the ongoing debate, Carmelo Anthony has some specific advice for the young sprinter.
The 4-time Olympic medalist was in a conversation with his co-host and guest on his podcast, 7PM in Brooklyn. When the topic of Noah Lyles came up, Anthony said:
Why do you keep shooting at the NBA? If you want to shoot, shoot at the fact y’all ain’t got no league for your own. Shoot at why they aren’t pouring money into that sport, which they should be. Don't be worried about no NBA n******. It's incomparable. We want to support you. Let’s do this together, let’s support everybody.Carmelo Anthony said
Carmelo Anthony’s advice to Noah Lyles was essentially to stop seeking attention by trolling the NBA. He suggested that such actions could be detrimental to Lyles’ goals and could backfire, undermining what he wanted to achieve.
Instead of shifting the focus to track and field, Lyles ended up facing backlash from NBA fans, players, and even Team USA Basketball. Despite his attempt to highlight athletics as a true measure of sporting success, he has instead found himself in the midst of criticism, which has undermined his original goal.
Carmelo Anthony thinks the 27-year-old sprinter has got it all wrong. Instead of looking to garner support for his field of sport, it made a lot of people root against him. That is what Anthony wants to see him change. Then only can they work to bring the attention to athletics.
NBA, its fans, and Noah Lyles
NBA fans are a passionate bunch. Not only will they vehemently support their stars, but they will also go after anyone who unnecessarily tries to berate them. Noah Lyles made that mistake almost a year ago. But at the Olympics, he tried to channel that again when he talked about Anthony Edwards getting a shoe deal.
He said it in the press conference after winning the gold medal in the 100m that Adidas should give him a special sneaker, as Spikes don’t make that much money. Lyles even went to the extent of dissing Edwards’ shoe launch. He later had to give a different perspective on why he missed Edwards’ sneaker launch just to avoid any further attacks.
After all, by then he was under a barrage of trolls from NBA fans. His 200m bronze finish fed further into those trolls. Hopefully he pays heed to what Carmelo Anthony said and focus on what he actually wants to do.
