- Carmelo Anthony suggested Jayson Tatum should come off the bench to maintain team chemistry with Jaylen Brown.
- Drew Hanlen, Tatum's trainer, criticized Anthony's advice, implying it undermined Tatum's role.
- Anthony sarcastically responded to Hanlen, asserting his support for Tatum and highlighting their mutual respect.
Jayson Tatum is preparing to return to play in the NBA, mere months after tearing his Achilles tendon. Usually, that would draw a lot of debates, and Carmelo Anthony decided to be one of them.
The Hall of Famer took to his podcast, 7 PM in Brooklyn, to talk about how the Boston Celtics superstar could find his way back into playing rhythm, and how it would be crucial to take care of his recovery.
There are two aspects that Anthony wanted to cover. One was that the franchise has been on a terrific run, with Jaylen Brown taking on the mantle of their leading scorer and defender. The other is that Tatum’s return could rattle the team’s current chemistry.
JB can get them to the Eastern Conference Finals. Now, winning, you’re gonna need a full strength, Jayson Tatum… Right now, Jaylen is holding the fort down. You don’t want to mess that… JT gotta be very mature about this situation… Let me just put my pride & ego aside… and continue to let JB steer the ship.
Anthony said
The New York native was essentially trying to suggest that Tatum should come off the bench, so as not to diminish or unsettle what Jaylen Brown has done so far. The former’s trainer saw this video and decided to comment.

This was Drew Hanlen, famed basketball trainer, who felt Carmelo Anthony was trying to diminish his client into becoming a role player. To counter Anthony’s comments, Hanlen essentially threw shade at him.
Carmelo Anthony barks back at Jayson Tatum’s trainer
Since Drew Hanlen is well-known in the basketball circles, his comment dissing Carmelo Anthony soon caught the NBC analyst’s eye and prompted him to write this in response.

DAMNNNNNNNNN LOL MY BAD Y’ALL I WON’T SPEAK ON ANY TOPICS RELATED TO WINNING ANYMORE LOL JUST WAS TRYING TO SHARE FROM A “GROWTH MINDSET.” Back to “small” mindset.
Anthony wrote
The 41-year-old did not specifically take the trainer’s name, but judging by the former New York Knicks great’s words, it became evident that he was taking shots at Hanlen.

Naturally, he had to be sarcastic about it, as Anthony had to show the trainer that he was trying to speak about what Jayson Tatum needed to do for his team.
Instead of trying to be selfish and upsetting the apple cart, the 10-time All-Star wanted the returning 28-year-old to become the bigger man and take one for the team.
Now that Hanlen’s response caught his attention, Carmelo Anthony sarcastically suggested that he would talk about things that ‘small-minded’ people associate with.
Carmelo Anthony gets the last laugh after Drew Hanlen tries to broker peace
Soon, this back and forth between the two went viral, leaving Drew Hanlen to face a lot of backlash for trying to undermine Carmelo Anthony. That led him to highlight the former third-overall pick’s accomplishments.
While writing about it, the basketball trainer also pointed out that Tatum, his client, had often studied Anthony’s shooting form and action in high school. After that, he then went on to write that he was not throwing shade at the basketball great.
Instead, he was trying to defend Tatum, as he felt the media was not giving the Celtics star enough credit for working hard to get back into the game faster than anyone has with an Achilles tear.
Why don’t you go ask your client who celebrates him the most. Respect though champ!! Heard You!!

This was Carmelo Anthony shutting the trainer for good, suggesting Hanlen go and ask Jayson Tatum how much the 19-year veteran roots for him. That was the end of their discourse, which means Anthony had the last laugh in the end.
