In the Paris Olympics semifinal match against Serbia, for 35 minutes, it looked like Team USA did not have an answer for their opponents. Thankfully, Stephen Curry‘s three-pointers kept them within touching distance of Serbia. Only towards the end of the fourth quarter, the Americans brought the heat, forcing turnovers and making crucial shots, and finally winning the game thanks to Curry, Kevin Durant and LeBron James. In the midst of all that, former NBA superstar Carmelo Anthony had a small part to play.

In the final minute of regulation, the Americans had the ball in their hands, and they moved towards the Serbian three-point line. Carmelo Anthony was seated courtside. When he noticed the defensive setup, he signaled Durant and Curry to switch their positions. The duo did that and set a screen to allow Durant to get a favorable matchup. Seeing this develop, LeBron James passed the ball to Durant. Then Anthony was seen seemingly instructing the 2-time champion to go one-on-one.

It could be that Carmelo Anthony knew Durant was the best of the three to take a clutch shot. Durant was fresher than the other two and can elevate from any spot for a shot. He eventually did exactly that when he faked Serbian forward Filip Petrusev to the left, which created space to his right. He then dribbled to his right and took off for a jump shot.

The shot went in without touching the rim. Probably Anthony knew that Durant’s ability to elevate and get a shot up without any obstruction was what Team USA needed at that moment. That lead was crucial in helping the Americans stave off a last gasp surge from the Serbians.

Fans noticed Carmelo Anthony’s impact

Keen eyed fans noticed Anthony at the bottom of their television screens shouting out the instructions. Seeing this, one fan wrote while sharing the clip on X;

Convinced they turned this around because they stopped listening to Steve Kerr and started doing whatever Melo is yelling at them from the other sideline.

The twitter account going by the id ‘Bradsketbawl’ summed up what fans across the world felt at that moment. They all felt that Carmelo Anthony had a significant role to play in the outcome of the game.

It goes to show the basketball IQ the 75th Anniversary Team member possesses. Anthony also happens to hold the most medals among Team USA men’s basketball players—a feat he just helped two of his fellow compatriots to beat at the Paris Olympics, as now they are assured of at least a silver.

That will make Kevin Durant the most decorated men’s Olympic basketball player from the USA. LeBron James will be joint second with his longtime friend and former teammate.
