Today marks five years since the NBA lost the Lakers legend, Kobe Bryant. The league has been mourning the superstar’s death for half a decade now but today is special. On the occasion, Bryant’s long-time friend and NBA great Carmelo Anthony paid tribute to the ‘Black Mamba’ on social media. Anthony looked back at the memories he shared with Bryant.

Carmelo Anthony and Kobe Bryant grew closer after teaming up together. The duo was the core part of the 2008 Olympics ‘Redeem Team’. Playing for the country was the starting point of the pair’s relationship. As the time has now become just a memory, expressed remorse on his Twitter. “Sometimes you never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory,” Carmelo Anthony wrote.

Bryant was known for his competitive personality. Despite being opponents in the NBA, the team had to play on one side in the Olympics. Anthony at the time took that responsibility and encouraged Bryant to keep the rivalries aside and enjoy the competition. The star played a big role in building the team’s chemistry. Hence, it was natural for Melo to reminisce about that memory on Bryant’s death anniversary.

Bryant tragically passed away five years ago in a helicopter crash sending shockwaves in the NBA world. Anthony, who played a game a day after the incident was teary-eyed in the post-game interview. The veteran revealed it was the ‘hardest game’ he had played in his career.

Being in the gym, working out and practicing were top priorities for LA star. Bryant went to lengths to keep up his amazing skills even if it required to practice before the sunrise.

Anthony got a piece of Bryant’s dedication during their 2008 Olympics tour. A clip from the Redeem Team documentary where Melo complained about working out very early in the morning went viral. Years later, back in October, Anthony talked about the clip during the Ball Magnets podcast. Anthony praised Bryant’s commitment.

Kobe was something totally different. Kobe was relentless. 4 o’clock in the morning, 6 o’clock in the morning… It worked for him… That’s what he needed to get the edge.
