LeBron James is a four-time champion, and four-time MVP, and is widely regarded as one of the greatest ever basketball players in history. But apparently, he is quite the lifeguard too. This lesser-known skill of the Los Angeles Lakers star has now been revealed by former NBA star Carmelo Anthony.

In an interview on Rachel Nichols’ Open Run podcast recently, the basketball legend recounted the time James saved his life while they vacationed in the Bahamas. When asked about that particular incident, Anthony shed light on the same.

Yeah, I wasn't dying, but yeah he came and got me. I was [floating away] … like he definitely, you know, Superman came and saved the day. It was like man, what?... I'm sitting there like, why it had to be him? Why it couldn't be like D-Wade, you ain't gonna hear about it from D-Wade.
Carmelo Anthony said

As stated by Anthony, he was drifting away from the boat as a result of strong currents in the water. And that was when James boldly came to the rescue to prevent him from drowning that day. The 40-year-old also jokingly stated that he remembers wondering why his savior wasn’t Dwyane Wade instead of LeBron James. According to him, nobody outside of them would have known of the incident if it happened that way.

The Lakers player has been close friends with Carmelo Anthony, right from the latter’s playing days in the league. That friendship was likely part of the reasons why the former NBA veteran was seen courtside to support Team USA at the 2024 Olympics, particularly in the game against Serbia.

LeBron James recounted how Carmelo Anthony was rescued in Bahamas

Back in 2015, Anthony, Wade, Chris Paul, and James were on a summer vacation with their families in the Bahamas, when a boat excursion turned scary. After several of the NBA stars jumped in the water to swim and explore the ocean, Anthony was missing when the group got back to the boat. That’s when they knew something was wrong and James went in search of him.

While recounting how the rescue operation went down at the time, the 39-year-old said:

I just knew that he was not back in the boat with the rest of us, so I went out looking for him. And through the grace of God... and not being afraid of the water, I was able to help him back to the boat. The only thing that was on my mind at that point and time, was getting my brother back to the boat.
LeBron James told Dave McMenamin of ESPN

James and Anthony both came into the league together via the 2003 NBA Draft. While his long-time friend is currently retired from the game, the duo still shares lifelong memories of each other.
