Things are about to shake up in a major way on WWE television going forward. As announced on SmackDown, a transfer window is now open that’d see stars jump brands, be it any—Raw, SmackDown, or NXT. That said, on the latest edition of the blue brand, Carmelo Hayes confronted GM Nick Aldis to know where he fits in all of this.
After a lukewarm warning to Aldis about his potential Raw move, the general manager told Melo that he’s going to face someone special next week on SmackDown. Taking to X, Hayes posted a photo of John Cena and asked the authority figure if he was the one. The official description of its YouTube video on the WWE channel reads that Nick’s pick will be SmackDown’s newest acquisition. Could it be Cena?
The 16-time World Champion is slated for a WWE return relatively soon. He’s on the brink of getting his retirement tour underway, the Alpha and Omega of which aren’t official yet. However, Cena’s advertised for the Netflix premiere of Raw, which entails he’s less than a month away from coming back.
Who knows if he will shock everyone and show up on SmackDown next Friday to be Carmelo Hayes’ mystery opponent? Melo vs. Cena is one prospect that almost everyone would want to see. If not Cena, who else could Nick Aldis bring in? There’s some speculation on social media that former AEW wrestler Penta, who just became a free agent, might be on Aldis’ radar.
A portion of fans was dreaming about Hayes’ former running mate Trick Williams joining the SmackDown roster. However, with his NXT title retention at NXT Deadline, that seems less likely at this point.
WWE confirms first two PLEs for John Cena in 2025
All in all, John Cena is penciled in for 35 to 40 WWE dates in 2025. While that includes the TV tapings he’ll do, the company has officially confirmed that he’s a part of both the Royal Rumble and the Elimination Chamber PLE.
Cena is actively promoting these appearances via his social media handles, asking fans to ride alongside him on this journey. The most awaited aspect of Cena’s farewell stretch is going to be his WrestleMania 41 showdown. Who’ll get the honor to lace up the boots with him at The Grandest Stage of Them All?
Could it be Randy Orton or Cody Rhodes? Or is it going to be Gunther? Not much time is left to avail answers to these burning questions. The road to WrestleMania begins at the Royal Rumble. John would feel he has to win it to operate on his own terms.
