Following their heated backstage altercation last week, Cody Rhodes and Carmelo Hayes squared off against each other on SmackDown. Unlike their previous encounter in April, this one was more competitive as Hayes brought the fight to Rhodes. However, The American Nightmare put away his opponent after hitting the Cross Rhodes.
Taking to X, Hayes broke his silence on the match result on SmackDown. Despite suffering a loss, Hayes held his head high, showing pride in taking the Undisputed WWE Champion to his limit. Since arriving on the main roster, the 30-year-old star has been nothing but impressive. Whether it be being a first-round Draft pick or challenging Rhodes on his first night, Hayes has exceeded fan expectations.
Hayes’ most notable stretch came during his summer rivalry with Andrade. The duo tore the house down for almost three months in a highly competitive seven-match series. As such, this eventually led to Hayes getting involved in the United States Title scene on the blue brand, although he remained unsuccessful in winning his first main roster gold.

The former NXT Champion then confronted Rhodes last week. Carmelo Hayes claimed that Rhodes’ rival, Kevin Owens, had been right following their heated segment. This irked the former AEW wrestler, who shoved Hayes as officials separated the duo before things could escalate. Despite failing to beat Cody Rhodes on SmackDown, the future is looking bright for HIM as he continues his path to becoming a main event talent.
Cody Rhodes set to face Kevin Owens at Saturday Night’s Main Event
Speaking of his rivalry with Kevin Owens, Cody Rhodes will finally square off against his former friend at Saturday Night’s Main Event. WWE made the announcement earlier this week. The match will most likely be the main event of the retro PLE.
For the past few months, Owens has become more unhinged with each passing week. The Prizefighter turned on Rhodes after the latter teamed with Roman Reigns at Bad Blood. Furthermore, KO crossed the line when he sent Randy Orton packing in an ambulance after hitting the banned Piledriver on the veteran.
Owens and Rhodes vented their frustrations on last week’s SmackDown. The American Nightmare referenced their Bash in Berlin clash where Owens failed to pull the trigger. In response, the former Universal Champion claimed that he would not hesitate this time, alluding to doing whatever it takes to destroy Rhodes.
