The San Francisco 49ers are going through a tough time, having fallen to a 6-9 record after enduring another loss. However, wide receiver Ricky Pearsall appeared to have an even worse outing during the Week 16 game. In an already struggling offense, he committed two costly penalties that eliminated the team’s last hope for playoff contention.

In the third quarter against the Miami Dolphins, Pearsall was penalized twice for illegal formation, pushing the Niners away from the red zone. The situation worsened when the second penalty negated a crucial 16-yard reception by Deebo Samuel on a third-and-8 play, which would have positioned the Niners at the 2-yard line.

The Niners didn’t let Pearsall go off the hook so easily for his two blunders as a clip of wide receivers coach Leonard Hankerson giving an earful to the young wideout on the 49ers sidelines has gone viral on the internet.

A really heated little chat with Pearsall

play-by-play announcer Jim Nantz said from the booth as CBS cameras panned behind the bench to the heated scene between Hankerson and Pearsall

Pearsall had been receiving a lot of empathy due to the tragic incident of him getting shot in the chest during an attempted robbery that made him miss six of the Niners’ games. However, as his mistakes continue to weigh heavily on the franchise, the team is no longer willing to overlook them.

Ricky Pearsall assures relationship with Leonard Hankerson remains strong

As heated as Hankerson’s demeanor towards Pearsall appeared on the camera after the second costly penalty, the rookie assured that it hasn’t affected their relationship. While talking to Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle, he acknowledged the blunders made during the Week 16 game.

It’s always all love with him. He’s just being the coach that he is. And for me, I’ve just got to accept the coaching and learn from it. It’s football. Emotions are high anyway. And I have to clean those things up. There was nothing that [happened] after that. Hank went right back to being normal. We all have the respect for each other.

Veteran wideout Samuel also addressed Pearsall’s blunders in a post-game press conference and refused to criticize the young player by calling the penalties “mental errors.” It appears the rookie has learned from his mistakes, but it wouldn’t be proved until he displayed it during the Week 17 game against the Detroit Lions.
