Caroline Garcia parts ways with her Father/Coach, joins hands with Urpi at Nadal Academy
Caroline Garcia and Luis-paul Garcia
Caroline Garcia, the former World No. 4, has seven WTA Titles and three Final appearances to her credit. Her last title win was at the Nottingham Open in 2019. In the last couple of years though she has seen her ranking drop out of the top 50, and she is currently ranked at a lowly No. 53 in the World.
Garcia was last seen competing at the Miami Open last month, and is now out with a knee injury. She is expected to be back in time for the French Open 2021.
Caroline Garcia declares Gabriel Urpi will be her coach at the French Open
Caroline Garcia has announced she has decided to stop being coached by her father, Louis-Paul, saying a new approach is necessary if she wants to win big titles. Garcia, who has been working with Louis-Paul since she began playing tennis, said she is now training at the Rafael Nadal Academy with WTA coach Gabriel Urpi. The arrangement is till the end of the French Open. Garcia had already trained out of Nadal’s academy since 2019, so the change is purely about coaching and tactics. She worked previously with Urpi in France’s Fed Cup team.
Caroline Garcia said, “It was my decision,” she told L’Equipe. She continued, “Today, I am more sure of myself, I have more confidence in myself, it was perhaps the right moment for this evolution. I want to go for big titles. If I am doing it now, it means I’m ready to do it.” Garcia admitted that moving on from her father was a very difficult decision for both her and her father and it will naturally be a big change.
