Although Wozniacki could not get the desired start as she lost the opening set 2-6, the Dane came back strong in the second set to fight it out till the end and win it 7-5. After the scores were level, Wozniacki buckled up and put on a dominant show in the deciding set. Wozniacki raced to a 6-1 win in the blink of an eye and secured herself a place in the second round.
Caroline Wozniacki sets up a clash with Danielle Collins
While her actions on the court against her opponent might be debatable, Caroline Wozniacki gave no one a chance to complain about her gameplay. The Danish ace notched up a win in three sets over Egyptian Mayar Sherif to set up a second-round clash with the USA’s Danielle Collins.
The Dane has gotten the best out of Collins in their three meetings on the tour so far. The only time Wozniacki lost to Collins was back in 2019 when she retired at the Rome Masters. However, Wozniacki beat the American at the US Open the same year to again take the lead in the head-to-head record.
Collins, for her part in the Games, advanced on Sunday after Germany’s Laura Siegemund retired from their first-round match with the score at 6-3, 2-0. Wozniacki and Collins will clash on Monday (July 29th).
