There has been a major controversy surrounding the French Open this year. The tournament organizers picked certain players to join the wildcards.

However, most of these wildcards went to French players, except for a few from Australia and the US. The tennis industry has criticized this decision, and even Caroline Wozniacki’s dad, Piotr Wozniacki, has jumped onto the bandwagon.

Wozniacki was hoping to get a wildcard entry into the main draw of the French Open. However, since the former Australian Open champion didn’t receive one, she might have to go through the qualifying rounds to make it into the main draw. Ultimately, her father was unhappy with this decision.

In an interview with Sport.pl, he criticized the tournament organizers for their double standards after the former World No. 1 was left off the wildcard list.

"Of course we could, because we have a ranking that allows it. So we could sign up for the eliminations in advance. But Karolina said that she had not worked hard all her life and had not achieved so much to now start as a junior.
Piotr Wozniacki said in an interview

Whether Wozniacki can qualify for the main draw of Roland Garros through the qualifying rounds is yet to be seen. For that, she’ll need to roll back the years and replicate some of her prime form.

At some point in life, however, there should be respect in a sport where a person meant something. There is no information from the WTA or the ITF, the organizer of Grand Slam tournaments. Karolina told me that it's difficult - if she doesn't get a wild card to Roland, at most she won't play in it. She preferred to wait until they responded to her application rather than submit to the eliminations. I support her.

What are the odds at the 2024 French Open?

Even without Caroline Wozniacki and Emma Raducanu in the main draw of Roland Garros, the tournament boasts numerous compelling storylines. Top players such as Iga Swiatek, Aryna Sabalenka, and Coco Gauff will take center stage at the second major of the year.

Swiatek appears to be in peak form, having clinched victories in the last two Masters’ 1000 tournaments in Madrid and Rome. With her sights set on a remarkable feat, she aims to emulate Justine Henin by potentially securing three consecutive French Open women’s singles titles.

Sabalenka claimed the Australian Open title earlier. Despite her heartbreaking losses to her Polish counterpart in the finals of both Madrid and Rome, she aims to make it two Grand Slam victories in a row to kick off 2024.

Gauff has made deep runs in recent tournaments but has yet to claim a title since winning the ASB Classic in the first week of 2024.

The American is eager to return to the winner’s circle after six months. Former World No. 1 Naomi Osaka adds to the storylines of the French Open as she returned to the tennis circuit earlier this year following her pregnancy in 2023.
