Real Madrid knocked Manchester City out of the 2023/24 Champions League quarter-finals in a penalty shootout. The match saw Madrid play a low block against the recent Treble winners, in an impressive defensive performance that had the City attack nullified.
Despite the win, former Madrid player Casemiro “suffered” watching the match. The game saw City dominating, keeping 67% of possession as well. The former Madrid midfielder was happy with the win but didn’t enjoy the match.
I suffered watching Real Madrid against City, I'm a big Real fan! Of course I was happy! For Real Madrid, there are my friends there, and for Manchester United too.Casemiro to El Chiringuito TV
The match saw Madrid play a low block, with goalkeeper Andriy Lunin putting up one of the best-keeping performances. City had 33 shots, with 9 on target. Rodrygo had opened the scoring in the 12th minute, but Kevin de Bruyne equalized in the 76th minute.
The match then went to extra time, with the score remaining 1-1. Finally, it went to penalties, where the hosts lost 3-4. Madrid will now play Bayern Munich in the Champions League semi-finals, which will be held on 1st and 9th May.
Rodri claims he saw only one team in loss against Real Madrid
Keeping a possession percentage of 67%, it is safe to say that Manchester City were the more dominant team during their loss to Real Madrid. City star, Rodri, claimed he saw only one team competing in the match.
Today I've only seen one team. In terms of defending, they defend and they knew how to suffer. We know how tough Real Madrid are, but in my opinion we should have gone through in terms of the chances and everything. But they know this competition and how to play. Congratulations to them.Rodri to Evening Standard
Rodri added that City deserved to go through the tie, but Madrid were much more well-suited to the penalties. He further said that he didn’t expect such a low block to be played by Madrid.
City will play Chelsea on the evening of the 20th in the FA Cup semi-finals. This is their chance to win a domestic double, especially with their chances of a treble gone. They currently are at the top of the Premier League, two points above Arsenal and Liverpool, and are favorites to win the league.
