World No. 6 Casper Ruud is the newest Barcelona Open champion. He outclassed World No. 7 Stefanos Tsitsipas with a scoreline of 7-5, 6-3 to win his first ATP 500 title. After the victory, he engaged in banter with a hater-turned-fan on X.
The user asked Ruud to play against him in Tennis Elbow and even demanded tickets for next year’s Monte-Carlo Masters if he managed to somehow beat the tennis pro. However, to everyone’s surprise, Ruud took the challenge quite positively and brought out his cheeky side.
My friend @casperRuud98, now that you've proven me wrong with the Barcelona title, let's play a multiplayer Tennis Elbow match. If I win, you should give me a ticket to the Monte Carlo match for next year. The user wrote
The 25-year-old, despite reaching second place in the rankings, never won an ATP 500 title before the Barcelona Open.
He reached the finals of major tournaments several times but remained unlucky. Before the Barcelona Open, he had the chance to clinch his first Masters 1000 trophy but lost to Tsitsipas in the finals of Monte Carlo.
Dream comes true for Casper Ruud after Barcelona Open
Casper Ruud, much like his idol Rafael Nadal, has been playing impressively on clay courts. He made it to the French Open finals two times, losing to Nadal and Novak Djokovic.
After defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas at the Pista Rafa Nadal court, Ruud’s dream of winning on the court named after Nadal finally came true.
I’m super happy to do it here in Barcelona in front of a packed stadium and on Rafa Nadal Court. It’s special to me because I looked up to him (Nadal) all my childhood, came here myself as a 13-year-old boy to watch him and the others play here. It’s a great feeling.Casper Ruud said after his match
It was Ruud’s third final of the year, having reached the summit clash at the Mexican Open last month, losing to Australia’s Alex de Minaur. Ruud will next play at the Madrid Open on April 26th.
