The Dallas Cowboys are set to enter free agency with minimal cap space, restricting their ability to make major roster moves. A key reason for this financial constraint is the massive contracts handed out to star quarterback Dak Prescott and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb.
Now they are left with just $17.5 million, which ranks 21st in the league. That is not enough to sign impactful players. Considering how bad they looked last season, fans and the rest of the football world are expecting Jones to bring in reinforcements this time around.
They need additions in all three facets of their roster. Prime among them is the need for a stud running back. But two situations will make it difficult for them. One is that there is a dearth of good running backs in the league, and now they all know how much they can be paid after Saquon Barkley‘s monster contract.
That means the Dallas Cowboys have to intelligently carve out cap space to sign players. One of those ways is to restructure existing contracts. With that possibility available, ESPN’s Todd Archer received this update.
The Cowboys have restructured the contract of Pro Bowl wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, creating $20 million of salary-cap space, according to sources.

This means the Dallas Cowboys will now have around $37 million to spend. That suddenly gives Jerry Jones the leverage to bring in some players. They need all the help as other teams are growing stronger with every passing day.
CeeDee Lamb’s desire to win led to contract restructure
Last season, CeeDee Lamb saw first-hand how bad the Dallas Cowboys were. Their defense might be good enough, but still needs some impactful additions. His offense, on the other hand, needs a lot of extra help as they lacked the ability to beat mid-tier teams even when healthy.

I want to win. It’s gonna take more than just myself.

This was the star wideout’s reply when a fan suggested his contract restructure was a horrible idea. The fan may have CeeDee Lamb‘s interest at heart as the receiver is risking his future income for immediate success. In the event this does not pan out, the Cowboys can cut him and end up not paying him his due worth.

But the 25-year-old knows he has time to earn that money back. Once he is a part of a winning team, all the money will automatically follow. That is why he is essentially helping Jerry Jones and his team to create the necessary cap space.
