Brian Schottenheimer gave CeeDee Lamb a break from receiver duty in the Cowboys’ first preseason game on Saturday against the Rams at SoFi Stadium. The star receiver still saw action.

Cameras picked up Lamb enjoying the game from the Cowboys’ dugout in street clothes. It also captured a comical moment that had the potential to be disastrous for the All-Pro wideout.

Lamb followed a pass from second-year QB Joe Milton and wandered closer to the touchline without realizing it. The sideline judge, Anthony Jeffries, slammed right into Lamb’s back, and both tumbled to the ground.

Everyone in the area laughed it off as a simple accident, but Lamb was lucky enough to escape with only a minor jolt.

Referee explained the sideline collision involving CeeDee Lamb

PFWA pool reporter Gary Klein spoke with Alex Moore, who officiated the Rams-Cowboys fixture. Klein asked Moore to elaborate on the collision that involved the side judge and Lamb.

Klein revealed that Lamb walked deep into the restricted white border area, where the referees operate during the game.

The official on the play was focused solely on doing his job, and he ran into CeeDee Lamb, who was standing in the restricted area… And with that contact, it’s an automatic foul.

Moore clarified

Moore further added that it’s a very rare occurrence because players usually stay away from the restricted area.

It’s something that everybody is aware of; that white area is our area to work safely.

Moore quipped

Lamb later uploaded a screenshot of the incident on Instagram with the caption “I feel like everyone needs a laugh [crying emojis].”

The 26-year-old wasn’t the only Cowboys regular who missed the Rams tie. Starting quarterback Dak Prescott sat out the fixture to let Milton and Will Grier take over shot-calling duties.

Prescott and Lamb haven’t shared a field since November 2024, so they are still in the process of mastering Schottenheimer’s offense.

All offseason again together, spending time together, weeks, days, sometimes a couple weeks. So, just getting back in the groove of things, understanding like all the things that we missed out on. I feel like it’s a lot of lost time, but we’re right back on track where we need to be.

Schottenheimer would probably prefer to keep his two best players out of harm’s way as long as possible, so the fans might not see them too much in the preseason.

Cowboys played sluggish football against the Rams

Milton had a rough start to the night. He threw a couple of wayward passes in the beginning, including an interception. He settled down once the game hit mid gear.

The former Tennessee Volunteer threw 17 completions from 29 for 143 yards and one touchdown, aside from 5 carries for 22 yards on the ground. Seventh-round rookie running back Phil Mafah posted 10 carries for 36 yards.

The Rams did not field their starting quarterback, Matthew Stafford, because of his back problems. Stetson Bennett took over and displayed an impressive performance. Bennett threw 16 completions from 24 for 2 touchdowns and one interception.

Running back Blake Corum carried the ball 9 times for 32 yards and scored 2 touchdowns, while Jarquez Hunter had 11 for 41. The game ended with a 21-31 scoreline in the Rams’ favor.

Up next, the Cowboys host the Baltimore Ravens in their second game, while the Rams play their local rivals, the Chargers.
