In an NBA 82-game season, missing two games doesn’t matter much. But in the Paris Olympics, where a team plays a maximum of six games, it’s a significant amount of time to be out. If it were a role player, not many would be concerned. However, this involves NBA Champion and All-NBA First Team selection Jayson Tatum. It has now led Boston Celtics governor Wyc Grousbeck to raise some serious questions with Team USA head coach Steve Kerr.

The majority owner of the winningest franchise in the NBA was speaking on call at The Greg Hill Show. There he was asked if he felt it odd that Kerr was not playing Tatum in the Olympics. He made his stance clear in response.

I mean, I wouldn't play Steve Kerr, let me put it that way. What's going on? It's a mystery. It's a complete mystery. I think Jayson doesn't deserve anything but praise, kudos and playing time.
Wyc Grousbeck said

Wyc Grousbeck mentioned that Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown had led the Boston Celtics to the NBA Championship. For them to not have any contributions to the Team USA Olympics effort was surprising.

The owner can be worried with what he is seeing transpiring on the screen. After all, Jayson Tatum is the face of the Boston Celtics. For him to be sidelined completely was unexpected. What is even more surprising is that his teammates, who are not to his level as of now, are getting minutes.

It is as if Steve Kerr does not see Tatum’s skills fitting the needs of the game. But that is what Grousbeck, Tatum’s mother, and several other people are asking. They are unable to understand what could lead to one of the biggest superstars of the game being sidelined entirely.

Jayson Tatum could spring a surprise in gold medal game

Steve Kerr could most likely field Jayson Tatum during the gold medal game of the Paris Olympics. But not because he is under pressure from all these people talking. He has the backing of the Team USA selection committee, and he must have come to the decision to bench Tatum after consulting with his coaching staff and the NBA Champion.

But France brings a different dimension to what Serbia did. They have forwards who can score from anywhere on the floor. That will need Tatum to bring out his perimeter defense and forceful scoring to tackle. His ability to put up three pointers will also go a long way to help Team USA defeat France and win the gold medal.

That way, all the noise surrounding his omission will quieten down. Moreso if he has a significant role to play in the victory. The face of the Boston Celtics will return home as one of only a select few to have an elite season.
