There’s a quiet riddle unfolding in Philadelphia. AJ Brown, one of the league’s most dynamic receivers, has become an understated presence in an otherwise undefeated Philadelphia Eagles start. The team keeps winning, yet Brown’s numbers remain muted with just 14 receptions for 151 yards in his four games.

Around 72.2 percent of his numbers came in a single game. In Week 3, the Eagles were forced to throw the ball as the Los Angeles Rams created an early advantage in points. In that game, Brown recorded 109 yards on six receptions. Apart from the one game, Brown remains limited to an extent, which the fans pointed as a sign of the limited role of the player in the team’s offensive strategy.

Following the Eagles’ 31–25 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Brown reportedly expressed his sentiments in a cryptic Instagram post that has since been deleted.

If you’re not welcomed, not listened to, quietly withdraw. Don’t make a scene. Shrug your shoulders and be on your way.

AJ Brown penned down and attributed the message to the Bible

He managed just seven yards on two receptions against the Buccaneers. The post was immediately termed cryptic and confusing. He has previously exhibited similar behavior, which was construed as passive-aggressive. In a playoff game last season against the Green Bay Packers, when he famously had similarly muted numbers, Brown was spotted reading a book in the middle of the game. However, Brown has clarified that reading helps him maintain focus during games, rather than signaling discontent.

In the backlash and the overall big picture of his limited performance, something very low for a wideout with a $33 million a year contract, Brown has got some support from former player Chad Johnson. In the Nightcap episode, Johnson said that fans do not understand how the limited role affects the player’s mentality. AJ Brown is the Birds’ numero uno wideout, the captain, and a person who has repeatedly said that he wants to be an Eagle throughout his career.

Do you understand what that does to players mentally? I don’t think fans understand. Yes, they won the game. But players want to contribute and help to win those said games.. He’s been telling us this for years now, last year he was reading his book.. You’re paying me $33M, not only am I the #1 WR, I’m the captain of the team for a reason. Allow me to be part of the offense.

Emmanuel Acho also comes to AJ Brown’s defense

Emmanuel Acho has voiced concerns that the Philadelphia Eagles may be taking advantage of AJ Brown’s temperament. Speaking on Speakeasy, the former NFL linebacker stated, “The Eagles are taking advantage of AJ Brown’s meekness.”

Acho compared Brown’s response to limited targets with that of other star receivers.

What did Stefon Diggs do in the playoffs when he wasn’t getting targets? Threw his hands up, looked straight at his quarterback… All AJ Brown has done is read a book on the sidelines. Has gone to the locker room and, say, passed. And has said some polite things on Twitter. The Eagles are very lucky they got AJ Brown and don’t have a diva.

Acho added

The Philadelphia Eagles return to action next week against the Denver Broncos at their home. They don’t face a team that currently has a winning record until after their bye week at the beginning of November. With the current state of how things are with AJ Brown, more can be expected to be revealed in the upcoming days.
