The past two days have been a rollercoaster experience for former Denver Broncos wide receiver Jerry Jeudy. A report from The Athletic revealed that he was nearly traded to the New York Jets, but owner Woody Johnson vetoed the trade because he was not satisfied with his Madden rating.

After the news surfaced, Jerry Jeudy took to X and called out former NFL wideout Chad ‘Ochocinco’ Johnson, as he has the power to determine the ratings of receivers. The latter responded to the former’s post on X via The Nightcap Show.

Chad Johnson justified Jeudy’s ratings and took credit for saving him from nearly being a part of a dysfunctional organization like the Jets.

This is not a bad thing for Jerry Jeudy. This is a good thing. I saved my brother Jerry Jeudy’s career. Can you imagine if he went to that abysmal organization right now?

Johnson’s not wrong on that one, although Jeudy is not on a playoff-bound team now either. He has had a good season and has thrived in Cleveland.

Chad Johnson takes his Madden rating duties seriously

To fans, the ratings may seem to be just numbers. However, to Johnson, who stepped into a partnership with EA Sports a few years ago, it is serious business.

I think you need to see the good side on why I kept your rating as low as I did, because the owners respect the decision making that I have.

The legendary wideout broke down his approach while rating players.

It is based on what you’re doing in real life, so they take that into account and the fact that I am the Madden’s rating adjuster and one whose credibility is of a high standard.

Chad Johnson said

Ocho had given Jeudy an 81 overall rating last season but this year, he has been elevated to an 83 overall.

Last season, Jeudy was on a Broncos team with Russell Wilson. That was a dysfunctional team as well but the trade to Cleveland has allowed him to shine. He has 1,052 yards and 4 touchdowns this season. Irrespective of what his rating may have been, it never should have been used to determine if he was a player worthy of being traded.

Woody Johnson’s Madden metrics while trading for players came under fire after the report came out, however, a Jets spokesperson refuted the claims. The individual stated that the ratings were “used as a reference point” and that they were “not determinative.”

Considering how bad the Jets have been, the idea of the team being run by an owner that values players based on their video game ratings is not hard to believe.
