The Cleveland Browns have finally found their next head coach in Todd Monken, who will lead Shedeur Sanders and the rest of his teammates into battle next season. Usually, head coaching hires bring a sense of joy for fans, even though some might not agree with them and would prefer to see how it all pans out.
When the Browns took their own sweet time to find their next leader, many were sweating as some of the best candidates had already signed on to other jobs.
It was expected that Todd Monken would follow John Harbaugh to the New York Giants, even though his final days with the Baltimore Ravens were clouded amidst Lamar Jackson‘s apparent displeasure.
That last bit was what concerned fans about how the 59-year-old can work to avoid those problems. Despite those questions, one former player believes it will be good for Shedeur Sanders.
The guy is obviously an offensive genius… I want to see what he does with a true pocket passer like Shedeur Sanders.
Champ Bailey said on Up & Adams
The Hall of Famer believes that Monken, through his time winning national championships with the Georgia Bulldogs and then pushing Lamar Jackson and the Ravens to take the next step, is proof that he can coach.

This would be unlike his first stint as an offensive coordinator on Freddie Kitchens‘ staff, where they were blamed for Baker Mayfield‘s struggles and eventual departure. Champ Bailey thinks that Shedeur Sanders, as a natural pocket passer, will benefit from Todd Monken.
ESPN crew not happy with Todd Monken’s hire, even though Shedeur Sanders seems excited
Shedeur Sanders welcomed Todd Monken with open arms by sharing the Cleveland Browns’ news on his Instagram feed. It seems he is excited by this news as he gets to work with someone who has proven he can coach a quarterback or two.
After all, Monken was responsible for helping Carson Beck earn millions in NIL money, and Lamar Jackson and the Ravens’ offense became a juggernaut. However, ESPN’s think tank do not agree.
Todd Monken becoming the head coach in Cleveland does nothing to make me think that the Cleveland Browns are going to be a better football team.
Marcus Spears said
This was Marcus Spears‘ response after taking a long pause to seemingly express his surprise, and after Stephen A. Smith let out quite a few ‘Oh my God‘ phrases after host Shae Cornette broke the news.

The former Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle pointed out that there were quite a few good Black American candidates in Brian Flores, Anthony Weaver, Nathan Schellhase, and others.
Still, the Browns ended up doing what the Browns do, and that is to make moves that frustrate even their best players at some point. Spears was not diminishing Todd Monken’s ability, just that he felt there were better options out there to lead the Browns.
Browns could lose defensive guru Jim Schwartz after hiring Todd Monken
The Cleveland Browns had been keeping defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz under consideration for their open head coaching job before passing it on to Todd Monken. That seems to have made matters worse.

After the Browns informed DC Jim Schwartz this morning they were passing him over to hire Todd Monken as head coach, Schwartz was visibly upset, said goodbyes in the building and told other coaches he’s not coming back, sources tell The Insiders. Schwartz is under contract and Cleveland wants to retain him. But his future is now unclear.

If the famed defensive genius does leave for another job, it could complicate matters for one of the league’s best defenses. As Marcus Spears said, hiring Monken might set the franchise back a few years.
