UEFA Champions League: Borrusia Dortmund vs Sporting CP player ratings as Haaland-less Dortmund bag a comfortable 1-0 win

Borussia Dortmund came out with all three points against the Portuguese club Sporting CP in a match that had very little goalmouth action. Janeman Malan’s first-half strike was the only goal scored as both defenses were on top for large periods of the game. Marco Rose’s side have now won both their matches in the group stages of the Champions League, whereas Sporting are winless from their first two.

Borussia Dortmund
1Gregor Kobel- 6.5/10- A solid performance from the keeper, who did not have much to do in goal. He was good with his distribution.
15Mats Hummels- 7/10- The veteran defender had an excellent outing and made a last-ditch challenge in the first half to keep the scoreline at 0-0. However, he earned himself a yellow card for a poor challenge in the second half.
16Manuel Akanji- 7/10- The Swiss defender was decent in defense and also had a huge role in the first goal scored ny Dortmund.
13Raphaël Guerreiro -7/10- The left-back made several runs into the box, from the left-hand side and did not have much to do defensively.
24Thomas Meunier- 6.5/10- The Belgian wasn’t at his best, on the night and misplaced quite a few passes giving Sporting the chance to counter.
11Marco Reus-6.5/10- The German attacker, was the main inspiration for the home side in attack and always seemed to find a bit of space for himself in the opposition half.
28Axel Witsel-6.5/10 A commanding performance from Witsel, sitting back in defense and helped his side build from the back.
8Mahmoud Dahoud- 5/10- The midfielder suffered an injury early inside the first sight minutes and was subbed off.
10Thorgan Hazard- 7/10- He was one of the liveliest players on the pitch, before being subbed off at the 70th-minute mark.
21Donyell Malen- 7/10- Scored the first goal, for Borussia Dortmund expertly finishing past Adan into the far corner.
22Jude Bellingham-7/10- The English teenager once again impressed and provided the assist for the first goal scored by Janeman Malan.
Substitutes
Julian Brandt- 6/10- He came on early in the 8th minute of the match, replacing the injured Dahoud in the middle of the park.
Marius Wolf- 6/10- he came on in the 71st minute to replace Hazard, as Marco Rose wanted more protection in defense.
Sporting CP
1 Antonio Adán- 6.5/10- The keeper pulled out 2 good saves for Sporting CP, and could not have done much to deny Malen’s goal in the first half.
4 Sebastián Coates- 7/10- A sturdy performance at the back from the experience center-back, who kept Malen quiet for the majority of the match.
3 Zouhair Feddal- 6.5/10- The defender made a last-ditch challenge in the final minutes of the match to keep the score at 1-0.
13 Luís Neto- 7/10 The midfielder barely had a touch of the ball, near the opposition penalty area, and looked tired for most of the second half. He received a yellow card for a late challenge on Bellingham in the 90th minute.
6 João Palhinha- 6.5/10- The Portuguese international had a good outing in midfield for Sporting CP but did not get much forward as his coach would have wanted him to do.
8 Matheus Nunes-6.5/10- He received a yellow card for his complaints to the referee in the first half, but apart from that he did brilliantly to stop most of Dortmund attacking moves from the centre.
2 Matheus Reis- 7.5/10- The midfielder put in a real shift down his left flank, and was arguably Sporting’s best player on the night.
24 Pedro Porro- 6/10- The young Spaniard, was full of running down the right flank, looking to exploit the space left behind Guerreiro. He was not at his best defensively at struggled to get back in time.
21 Paulinho- 6.5/10- A mediocre performance from the striker, who missed a couple of chances and did not look to be on the same wavelength as the rest of his teammates.
19 Tiago Tomas- 5.5/10- The Portuguese youngster had a match to forget, as he ended up with a pass success rate of a mere 57 percent. He did not have any attempts at goal as well.
17 Pablo Sarabia- 6/10- Sarabia hardly had any opportunities on the right flank for Sporting and was subbed off after a disappointing performance in the second half.
Substitutes
Jovrane Cavral- 5.5/10- He came on to replace Sarabia at the 70th minute mark but did not have much impact in the remaining minutes.
Bruno Tabata- 5/10- The striker did not have much service to him, after coming on for the final 6 minutes, replacing Pedro Porro.
Daniel Braganca- 6/10- He came on to replace Palninha in midfield for the final five minutes.
Ricardo Esgaio- 5/10- He made a few wayward passes, at a time when Sporting was looking for the equalizer, after coming onto replace Matheus Reis for the final 5 minutes.
