Champions League: Istanbul Basaksehir v Manchester United match report
Istanbul Basaksehir earned its first win in the Champions League as it defeated Manchester United at the Basaksehir Fatih Terim Stadium. Ole Gunnar Solksjaer’s side was beaten in both attack and defence as the home team outclassed them. 35 year old Demba Ba scored a goal along with Edin Visca to give the home team a two goal lead. Anthony Martial scored one for Manchester United, but that was all they could manage.
Match Report
Manchester United were very poor in both attacking and defending. Only last week they were flying high after having beaten RB Leipzig 5-0 and PSG the week before that. This week they lost to Arsenal and Istanbul Basaksehir and put on a horrible performance. Truly Manchester United is its own enemy as they simply aren’t able to be consistent for weeks together.
Demba Ba’s goal caught them sleeping as he was offered acres of space to run and slot the ball past Dean Henderson. The latter was deputising in place of David De Gea and hardly could be blamed for any of the goals concerned. Ba was at the halfway line as Edin Visca hoisted a clearance upwards. He surged forward and calmly put the ball past the keeper.
Later Juan Mata was dispossessed in the left by Deniz Turuc, who fired a low cross into the box. Demba Ba let the ball go through his legs and Edin Visca made no mistake as he smashed the ball past Henderson. Yet again the home side ripped apart United’s defence and Henderson was left stranded. He must be wondering if this is what David De Gea goes through week in and out.
Anthony Martial pulled one back for the visitors just three minutes after the second goal was scored. Luke Shaw has been putting on the performance of his life since Alex Telles was signed. Yet again he delivered a perfect cross into the box and Martial found himself in space just six yards in front of goal. He fired in a header towards the bottom right corner and got his second goal of this Champions League.
However that was all as Manchester United was poor in the next half. Only in the dying minutes of the match did Harry Maguire get a header that almost became a goal. However Alexandru Epureanu cleared from off the line and stopped United from equalizing.
The match ended in the host’s favour and they get a lifeline now. United will be left shocked as they saw the double header with this team as easy points. United still tops the group, but will look to forget this performance and get back to winning ways.
