Champions League: RB Salzburg v Bayern Munich match report
RB Salzburg hosted Bayern Munich at the Red Bull Arena in Austria. Bayern. The match ended 2-6 in Bayern Muncih’s favour as goals from Robert Lewandowski, Jerome Boateng, Leroy Sane and Lucas Hernandez scored, along with an own goal from Rasmus Kristensen. The win ensured that Bayern continued its perfect start to the season, with 9 points from 9.
Match Report
Merghim Berisha opened the scoring for RB Salzburg after Sekou Koita’s shot from outside was deflected towards him. He took a touch and buried the ball in the net past Manuel Neuer. Soon after Serge Gnabry was seemingly fouled in the box by Daniel Szoboszlai and a penalty was given, but VAR checks showed that the former was the one who had fouled the latter. The penalty was not given and Salzburg still were in the lead.
Eight minutes later Bayern were awarded a clear penalty which wasn’t overturned. Thomas Mueller showed off some skills at the edge of the box and when he moved into the box, Enock Mwepu clipped his ankle. Robert Lewandowski stepped up to take the penalty and slotted it in, thus opening his account for this season. Bayern took the lead through an own goal when Mueller’s cross was deflected into his own net by Rasmus Kristensen. He had tried to clear the ball, but only managed to put the ball into his own net. This happened right at the end of the first half and Bayern lead at half-time.
Both the teams were very good in their attacking play, but the goals were less as the goalkeepers stood up there. Zlatko Junuzovic played really well but was subbed off in the 65th minute for Masaya Okugawa. A minute hadn’t even passed as the latter scored to level for Salzburg. He took two touches and slotted the ball past both Jerome Boateng and Manuel Neuer. However this was where the match was turned on its head as Bayern unleashed a flurry of goals.
Jerome Boateng headed in a Joshua Kimmich corner, which was his first goal in five years. Leroy Sane then scored in the 83rd minute and Lewandowski scored from a Javi Martinez cross in the 88th minute. Lucas Hernandez added a sixth goal in the sixth minute of injury time and that closed the match for Bayern Munich.
Bayern is top of the group with 9 points while Atletico Madrid is next with 5 points.
