The Los Angeles Chargers entered the 2024 NFL Draft with uncertainty at the wide receiver position following the departure of standout receivers via trade. Football followers expected the team to select a receiver like Malik Nabers or JJ McCarthy, Jim Harbaugh’s former college quarterback. However, the Chargers surprised everyone by drafting offensive tackle Joe Alt with the 5th overall pick.
In this draft, the wide receiver position was loaded with elite playmakers. The expectation that a receiver would be joining Commissioner Roger Goodell on the stage grew louder when the Chargers traded both Keenan Allen and Mike Williams in the off-season.
LSU star Malik Nabers was available and considered the second-best receiver in this draft. What makes matters worse is that the New York Giants nabbed Nabers with the next pick, even when all the talk was for them to draft a QB.
Chargers fans also had JJ McCarthy‘s name in the mix. Just in case new head coach Jim Harbaugh wanted to start fresh with his trusted college QB. They skipped McCarthy too as they went with an offensive tackle. It begs to understand that old-school coaches swear by the concept of building from the trenches.
Drafting Joe Alt is not a bad decision by any means. He does address their immediate as well as long-term need to have someone protect the blindside. But many are wondering who starting QB Justin Herbert will throw to, despite having all those receivers available to pick from.
Fans losing it as Los Angeles Chargers do not pick position of need
NFL fans are wondering how the Los Angeles Chargers will address their biggest glaring weakness heading into next season. It is not as if a lot of high-end receivers are available in free agency. Nor will a trade for one be cheap. Although one can think of selecting receivers in the 2nd round. But by then almost all the top-rated wideouts will be gone.
Therefore, they lit up the internet asking questions about their draft decision. Check out some of those reactions below:
The Chargers can right the ship by drafting receivers with a good upside in the coming rounds. But the team’s fans will not forget that they could have addressed their biggest need with some of the best prospects in the 2024 NFL draft.
