2024 is a big year for Justin Herbert, but he has to wait it out slightly longer because of a foot injury he sustained during Los Angeles Chargers training. While it’s uncertain how long he will be out, several reports claimed he could miss the entire pre-season.

The Chargers announced via social media that Herbert was diagnosed with an injury to the plantar fascia in his right foot. This was later confirmed by ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter and Kris Rhim.

It’s unclear the reason behind the injury, but according to the Chargers, Justin Herbert will most likely be out for 2 to 4 weeks. As a result, the 26-year-old QB could miss out on pre-season football games against the Seahawks, Rams, and Cowboys, beginning on August 10.

ESPN’s injury analyst Stephania Bell tweeted that she had suffered similar injuries in the past. As per Bell’s expertise, these types of injuries take time to heal, and unlike her, Herbert has to play football right after the recovery.

In sympathy with QB Justin Herbert, I can report that I too have a plantar fascia injury (torn medial band). This is where it hurts like *#%*^ and I did it running about 4 weeks ago. Still painful. Can’t run. And I don’t have to play professional football in a few weeks.

Herbert played 13 games in 2023. He recorded 3134 passing yards from 297 completions and threw 20 touchdowns to 7 interceptions while also rushing 52 times with the ball for 228 yards and 3 rushing touchdowns.

Who will replace Justin Herbert?

With Hebert on the sidelines for the next few weeks, the quarterback responsibility falls on backup Easton Stick. The 28-year-old filled in for Herbert midway through last season after the Oregon alumni broke his index finger on his throwing hand against the Denver Broncos.

Stick played a total of 5 games, starting in 4. He completed 111 passes for 1129 yards with a completion rate of 63.8 and threw 3 touchdowns and 1 interception. However, he lost all 4 games, as the Herbert and Stick combination only managed 5 wins all season.

Stick’s contract ran out after the season ended, but the Chargers decided to re-sign the four-time NCAA champion for one more season. The Chargers also have 2023’s seventh-round pick Max Duggan and undrafted rookie Casey Bauman in the reserves. Herbert’s injury should see them taking more reps during the pre-season.
