In Short
  • Charles Barkley defended Tom Izzo's coaching style, emphasizing that yelling is part of effective coaching.
  • He criticized media perceptions of coaching methods, suggesting that those offended should seek better support systems.
  • Michigan State advanced to the Sweet Sixteen, marking Izzo's 17th appearance in this round of the NCAA Tournament.

Former NBA star and Hall of Famer Charles Barkley is a prominent studio analyst and an avid follower of college basketball. Earlier this week, he was a part of the commentary crew alongside the legendary Dick Vitale and Brian Anderson for the NCAA Tournament.

With the opening rounds of the NCAA tournament underway, the Michigan State Spartans, led by Tom Izzo, made it to the Sweet Sixteen. Following their win, Barkley took a moment to praise the longtime Spartans coach and the culture he has built at Michigan State.

The media, who don’t know anything about sports, say ‘Why is he yelling at his players?’ That’s called coaching… if parents & friends get mad because you’re getting yelled at, get better parents & better friends.

Charles Barkley is one of the most vocal personalities out there. The Chuckster does not shy away from speaking his mind on different matters. A few days ago, he took shots at TNT over cheap security systems and criticized ESPN over scheduling conflicts a few months ago.

The Michigan State Spartans beat Louisville in the Round of 32 to advance to the Round of 16 of the NCAA Tournament. It is the Spartans’ 17th Sweet Sixteen appearance under Tom Izzo.

The veteran coach has had his fair share of critics over the years. His methods are sometimes deemed as outdated for the modern-day game. There is no doubt that Izzo is from the “old school”. He is a demanding coach and expects all his players to work on their defense, be in top condition, and play with utmost discipline.

His coaching methods may be seen as insensitive and too demanding to some, but Barkley sees no problems with it, as he came to the defense of the long-time Spartans coach. Barkley, who comes from an older generation himself, is one of the “old heads” who loves to call out today’s generation of players as soft.

Fans react to Charles Barkley defending Tom Izzo’s coaching style

With his 17th Sweet Sixteen appearance, Tom Izzo climbed to the fifth spot for most Sweet Sixteen appearances by a coach. In his last 16 appearances, he has gone 11-5. Prior to their win over Louisville, they took out Dakota State.

After Charles Barkley came to the defense of the 71-year-old, fans took to social media to react to his comments.

The internet was divided over Izzo’s coaching methods. Each coach has their own styles and methods, some work and some do not, depending on how the players take it. Michigan State will play the winner of the UCLA-UConn game in the Sweet 16 round of the tournament.

Charles Barkley is impressed by the Michigan Wolverines

The Michigan Wolverines have been promising so far, and their performances have impressed even Charles Barkley. Last season, the Wolverines reached the Sweet 16, where they were eliminated by Auburn.

Chuck spoke highly of the Wolverines and is convinced they can already punch their ticket to the Final Four.

These guys can already start making their reservations in Indy. They’re going to Indy. That was one of the most complete annihilations. Saint Louis didn’t play that bad. If you beat them, you have to have a great 3-point shooting contest. Some other teams have some bigger size, they got a chance. But they’re going to Indy.

The Wolverines registered convincing wins over Howard and Saint Louis. They now advance to the Sweet 16 and await the winner between No. 4 Alabama and No. 5 Texas Tech.
