Former NBA player and Hall of Famer Charles Barkley came to the defense of Hollywood star Timothée Chalamet for his recent comments that triggered backlash. Chalamet was nominated for “Best Actor” for his role in Marty Supreme at the Oscars this year, but lost to Michael B. Jordan.
The actor was in the headlines recently for his comments on Ballet and Opera. In an interview with Matthew McConaughey at the University of Texas in February, Chalamet dismissed ballet and opera as art forms that audiences do not care about. His comments sparked several reactions from the performing arts community.
Charles Barkley was asked by a fan about his thoughts on Chalamet’s comments on The Steam Room podcast.
I love Timothee Chalamet. They’re (Ballet and Opera) alright. I saw everybody overreact to Timothee Chalamet’s comments. I guarantee you he’s been to the opera and the ballet. We’re to the point where people can’t joke at all. That’s the only thing that bothers me. You can’t even be funny and cute anymore. The stuff he said was cute and funny. Can’t even say it anymore. Somebody’s gonna be offended.

Charles Barkley has always been known to be a vocal figure, whether it is about basketball, current affairs, or politics. The former MVP raised his voice on Inside the NBA about the shootings that took place in Minneapolis following the deaths of Renee Nicole Good and Alex Pretti, and recently reacted to the White House controversy surrounding the men’s and women’s hockey teams.
Meanwhile, Timothee Chalamet is an avid fan of basketball. He is a childhood fan of the New York Knicks and has made several appearances courtside during Knicks games. The Dune actor was a prominent figure in the front row last season during the Knicks’ 2025 playoff run. Chalamet even made an appearance on the Mind The Game podcast co-hosted by LeBron James and Steve Nash.
Stephen A. Smith calls out Charles Barkley for hating on the Los Angeles Lakers
Charles Barkley has been overly critical of the Los Angeles Lakers over recent years and never misses the opportunity to take digs at the esteemed franchise. Despite sitting at third place in the Western Conference standings, Barkley never fails to dismiss them as championship contenders.
NBA analyst for ESPN Stephen A. Smith offered a strong counterargument to Barkley’s criticism on First Take.
Charles needs to calm down. Stop whining. You got a good job, you’re looking good, you’re feeling good, you’re getting ready to do the NCAA Tournament, you’re getting paid lovely, you’re chilling in Atlanta, and now you’re going to Dayton. Just relax, calm the brakes. A top-three seed in a conference is a contender. You know this.

The Lakers are coming off an impressive 100-92 win over the Houston Rockets at the Toyota Center on Monday night. The win sees their winning streak extended to six games. With a spot in the postseason almost assured, the Lakers should be seen as contenders considering their rich form at the moment.
Dick Vitale and Charles Barkley will call their first NCAA Tournament game together
It looks like Dick Vitale and Charles Barkley will join forces and will call Tuesday night’s second First Four matchup in Dayton, Ohio, between Texas and N.C. State. Vitale, who is well known for his tenure since 1979 as a college basketball broadcaster for ESPN, had earlier declined a standing invitation from CBS and TNT Sports to call an NCAA Tournament game.

It was a phone call from Barkley that changed Vitale’s mind. Since 2011, Barkley has been a studio analyst for the NCAA Tournament and Final Four on CBS and TNT Sports. This is the first year he has appeared on ESPN. Inside the NBA airs on the network while being produced by TNT Sports.
The two share a strong relationship, and the longtime friends first jelled quickly in a game at Rupp Arena, which Kentucky won 72-60. Vitale said the Kentucky game with Barkley was one of his five greatest moments since becoming a television analyst in 1979.
