Kevin Durant is about to start the next phase of his career with the Houston Rockets. His aim remains the same, as he wants to lead a team to a championship or two.

The superstar has not been successful in his attempts to do so with either the Brooklyn Nets or the Phoenix Suns. In both instances, the 2-time champion was the de facto leader of the squad, but could not lead them deep into the playoffs.

Both times, he had All-Stars playing alongside him. On the Nets, he had Kyrie Irving and then James Harden for a brief period. After that, he had Chris Paul and Devin Booker on the Suns first, and then Bradley Beal for two seasons.

Despite playing alongside an array of top stars, Kevin Durant was nowhere close to fighting for a championship. That is why Charles Barkley once mentioned that he did not think of the Slim Reaper as a ‘bus driver’.

Essentially, the Hall of Famer felt the 15-time All-Star was not good enough to lead a team to a championship. When it was Durant’s turn, while on Netflix’s Starting 5, he had a reply waiting.

I done rode the bus, I done filled the gas tank up, I was the gas, I was the wheels, the axle, the brakes, all different given parts. I was in the back of the bus, I played every role for that team.

Kevin Durant said

The DC native believes he did everything that was required of him when he was with the Golden State Warriors. That is why he feels Barkley was incorrect to label him as a ‘bus rider’.

Kevin Durant claps back at Charles Barkley

According to Charles Barkley, Kevin Durant was just a passenger in the Golden State Warriors’ championship run. The clip showing the Round Mound of Rebound stating his opinion shows Barkley agreeing that the superstar did lead his OKC to the NBA Finals. At this point, Durant’s voice returned.

He never knew what it was like to remove your ego so you can go out there and help a city, a town win a championship. It was all about him. His whole life, his whole career. His whole life is about how he feel, how he wanna talk, how he can say anything to anybody, ’cause I’m Charles Barkley, I can say whatever.’

Kevin Durant said

The 6′ 11″ forward believes just because Charles Barkley believes he can say anything, it does not mean he is right. Again, just because he wants to talk does not make it true.

Durant feels these opinions do not matter as the 62-year-old forced the Philadelphia 76ers to trade him away after being unhappy about their performances. Therefore, that nullifies Barkley, as he himself was not capable enough to lead the Sixers to a title.

Kevin Durant to head to OKC for opening night

Kevin Durant was supposed to be the superstar who led the Oklahoma City Thunder to a championship. That did not happen, and he left for greener pastures.

Two championships and multiple individual accolades later, the former league MVP is about to return to his former team. The Houston Rockets will take the trip to Oklahoma City to open their 2025-26 season.

That means Durant will be at hand to possibly watch his former team celebrate their first NBA championship. It might be bittersweet, knowing it could have been him to do so. However, now, he will be looking to beat the defending champions in the building he once called home.
