The No. 1 overall seed Auburn Tigers took on West Region No. 1 Florida Gators in Saturday’s Final Four showdown, with a shot at capturing the program’s first-ever NCAA Tournament title. In attendance was former NBA star Charles Barkley, proudly supporting his beloved Auburn squad.
The Tigers had a nine-point lead at one point, but Florida’s Walter Clayton Jr. scored 34 points and was ultimately too much to handle. His impressive performance, combined with Auburn’s difficult three-point shooting, which saw them shoot only 7 of 25 threes (28%), might have made the difference. Interestingly, Barkley had a bittersweet reaction to his side’s loss.
A viral video captured a visibly disappointed Charles Barkley, the former Auburn standout and current TNT/CBS broadcaster, reacting to the Tigers’ Final Four loss. Barkley had been pulling hard for his alma mater, especially with the team on the brink of making school history—but Saturday’s outcome fell short of those hopes.

As for the Gators, Clayton stood out for his side. Given that he has been a key component of Florida’s success throughout the season, Clayton made the right decision. According to CBS Sports, his 34-point performance on Saturday also made him the first player since NBA great, Larry Bird (1979) to have consecutive games with 30 points or more in the Elite Eight or later.
In addition, basketball fans were quick to troll Barkley and his reaction to the Auburn Tigers’ loss. Barkley is known for his weird and unusual takes, but this time around came under the wrath of the NBA community on social media.

Before being chosen fifth overall by the Philadelphia 76ers in the NBA Draft, Barkley attended Auburn for three years from 1981 to 1984. Like most former players, he still supports his old mater in the NCAA Tournament.
Charles Barkley’s take regarding the Tigers’ loss in the Final Four
As Auburn lost its hold on a trip to the national championship, Charles Barkley watched helplessly. Barkley was inconsolable throughout the defeat at the Alamodome in San Antonio, but he was calm during the CBS telecast that followed. On the CBS panel, the former NBA star talked candidly about his team’s devastating defeat on Saturday.
The best team won. Our guys played valiantly. It was a heck of a game. I’m so proud of our team and Coach Pearl and those kids. I’m disappointed, but Florida was the better team.
