Charles Oliveira made his comeback against Mateusz Gamrot in the exciting main event of UFC Rio in Brazil. Four months ago in his previous outing, ‘Do Bronx’ was brutally knocked out by Ilia Topuria while trying to reclaim his belt. Many fans doubted Oliveira’s chances, but the veteran fighter yet again surprised everyone by finishing Gamrot impressively.
Right from the opening bell, both fighters engaged in a ground exchange as Gamrot successfully secured an early takedown attempt. Oliveira, well-known for his elite BJJ skills, smoothly transitioned through multiple positions and eventually took Gamrot’s back, threatening a rear-naked choke. Although the Polish star defended well, Oliveira controlled the grappling exchanges throughout the round.
The second round started with both fighters exchanging crisp strikes, showing their determination to dominate the fight early. Midway through the round, Oliveira skillfully secured a clean takedown and immediately transitioned into a dominant grappling position against Gamrot. He quickly applied a perfect rear-naked choke, forcing Gamrot to tap at 2:48, marking Oliveira’s 22nd submission victory.
Following the finish, the home crowd erupted with loud cheers as Oliveira jumped off the Octagon in excitement. He celebrated his win by bringing his baby to the Octagon and showing it to the whole MMA community. However, during his post-fight interview, ‘Do Bronx’ made his callout against none other than Max Holloway.
Hey, Hunter (Campbell). Charles Oliveira and Max Holloway BMF, let’s make that happen.

Oliveira was originally scheduled to face Rafael Fiziev, but the Azerbaijani contender was forced to withdraw because of an injury. The UFC quickly needed a replacement, and Gamrot stepped in to seize what was clearly an opportunity of a lifetime. For the Polish fighter, defeating Oliveira would have been a massive boost in lightweight rankings.

However, the reality turned out differently as his strong wrestling background was no match for the UFC’s best BJJ expert. Many critics assumed that ‘Do Bronx’ was finished, but he proved everyone wrong with a remarkable and inspiring comeback performance. The BMF title is an iconic belt, and Holloway recently defended it successfully against Dustin Poirier at UFC 318.
Max Holloway accepts Charles Oliveira’s callout
Charles Oliveira and Max Holloway first met inside the Octagon in 2015 at UFC Fight Night 74 in Saskatoon, Canada. The bout was highly anticipated, as both rising featherweights were known for their technical striking and exciting finishes. Unfortunately, the fight ended unexpectedly when Oliveira suffered a freak neck and shoulder injury just ninety seconds into the opening round.

Holloway was declared the winner by TKO due to injury, but both fighters showed mutual respect after the disappointing conclusion. Since then, fans have often discussed a potential rematch between Oliveira and Holloway, given their incredible evolution and skills. Now, with both fighters achieving greatness in different divisions, the possibility of revisiting their unfinished rivalry excites the MMA world.
Holloway and Oliveira have become huge pay-per-view stars, and this fight makes the right sense for both of them. The ‘Blessed’ has already acknowledged this callout and, in his recent KICK stream, shared his views on this potential fight.
We heard the callout… it would be a fun one. Me and him have a history. He’s blaming [the loss] on some type of injury. I guess we get to figure it out now. My hand is getting better, we’re just waiting to get cleared.

Holloway made it clear that he doesn’t want to wait for the White House card scheduled for June 2026. He instead prefers the fight to happen sooner, ideally around March in Las Vegas, where he’s fought many memorable battles. It remains to be seen whether the UFC promotion supports this plan and decides to make the exciting bout happen.
