Former Bellator lightweight champion Michael Chandler is all set for his UFC. Fans are about to find out if he can compete with the division’s elites. He is booked to face Dan Hooker at UFC 257 on 23 January 15, 2021, in Abu Dhabi.

But UFC recently disclosed that the first pick for Chandler was “Do Bronx” Charles Oliveira. Oliveira recently fought against Tony Ferguson and completely dominated him and hence he was unable to make weight in time.

UFC Dana White told The Mac Life “We offered him this fight (with Chandler) but he couldn’t make weight, so you can’t blame the guy for that. Look at Oliveira. I mean, look at what this guy has done. Coming off that performance that he just put on over Tony (Ferguson), it’s hard to overlook him.”

Oliveira is (30-8 and 1 NC) on his professional record and he remains in the lightweight title hunt.

The future of lightweight division is still uncertain

Dana White is scheduled to meet Khabib Nurmagomedov to discuss his future in the UFC, it is possible that the former champion would come back for one last fight. But who is he going to face still remains the question, because Dana said he wants to make the rematch between Conor vs. Khabib possible.

But Khabib might want to face St-Pierre for his last fight as this was his father’s last wish. Charles Oliveira is also in the title picture, so there isn’t much clarity on what’s going to happen. After Dana and Khabib’s meeting things would be a lot clear.
