Dana White had offered a 300K bonus for the UFC 300, and the fighters looked very intent on getting it. After impressive fights in the prelims and early prelims, the onus was on the fighters in the main card to make it better. Charles Oliveira and Arman Tsarukyan did just that.
After three hard-fought rounds, Tsarukyan emerged victorious via split decision. An overwhelming section of the MMA community felt that Tsarukyan did enough to win the fight. After two rounds, most had Oliveira winning first and Tsarukyan winning the second in the lightweight title eliminator fight. In the third round, without a last-minute D’Arce choke attempt from Oliveira, Tsarukyan was in control.
Mike Bell, Adalaide Byrd, and Ron McCarthy were judges for the fight; they all have had controversial scorecards before. However, this time, Mike Bell scored it for Oliveira. For context, Bell was the judge who scored 10-8 for Alexa Grasso in the fifth round of her rematch against Valentina Shevchenko. Even though many felt that Tsarukyan won round 3, some felt that Oliveira won round 3. Noted Canadian Sports company VerdictMMA had Oliveira edge Tsarukyan in round three by the slightest of margins.
With the victory, Tsarukyan called for a title shot against Islam Makhachev. The pair fought in what was the former’s UFC debut. Barring the knockout loss to Adriano Martins and the first fight with Alexander Volkanovski, Tsarukyan gave Makhachev the toughest fight of his career.
