Trackhouse Racing’s Justin Marks is the happiest Cup team owner at the moment, as his trust in three times Supercars champion Shane van Gisbergen secured his third win of 2025 season at Sonoma. Joe Gibbs Racing’s Chase Briscoe, who finished the race P2, was beyond impressed with the No:88 Chevy driver’s victory.
Shane van Gisbergen started the Toyota/Save Mart 350 on pole, lead almost every lap of the race, with the rest of the field giving him close to no competition till the end. The No:19 Camry of Chase Briscoe had the last opportunity to take the lead, but his aggressive moves on the final restart wasn’t good enough against the elite road course racer.
Witnessing the No:88 driver perform, Briscoe was speechless and on his post-race interview made a bold comment. He admitted that SVG racing in the road courses is so dominant it’s like he is Michael Jordan on the basketball court. It’s ironic that on the way to victory lane the Kiwi racer beat three of Jordan’s own drivers, 23XI Racing’s Tyler Reddick, Bubba Wallace and Riley Herbst.
Yeah, I mean, for sure, the, really the only opportunity I had was on the restarts. I obviously never played basketball against Michael Jordan in his prime, but I feel like that’s what it was probably like.
Chase Briscoe said via 5 GOATS.
The JGR Toyota driver believes the Supercars’ champions racing has increased the bar for the rest of the grid in road courses, showing them, they have a tone to learn to get better in such venues. He then admitted that, even if he was able to pass the Chevy in the final restart, it wouldn’t have taken long for the veteran to come back and get back on P1.
Yeah, that guy’s just unbelievable on road courses. Just so good. He’s really raised the bar of this entire series. Yeah, proud of the effort. I thought there was one restart I was maybe gonna get clear of him, but I mean, truthfully, he was probably gonna pass me back by the end of the lap.

Chase Briscoe is proud of his effort on Sunday
Later the star TRD driver shared his thoughts on his own race on Sunday and asserted that he is proud of the effort, though it yielded just a P2 finish. He pointed out that he had the second fastest car of the week and finished the race exactly where he should have.

But yeah, proud of the effort. We were, you know, second-place car all day and obviously ended up second with it. So, yeah, just, man, I honestly don’t know what more I need.
Chase Briscoe said.
He also admitted that it was very frustrating sometime to race SVG, as every time he makes a move and close the gap between the two, the Kiwi racer simply picks up the pace and crate more gap. But the fact he was able to get the better all but one driver in his worst road course track is special.
I feel like my car is extremely good and I feel like every time I would kind of run down Shane, he would just pick up the pace himself and start driving back away. So, yeah, it was frustrating at times, but I was honestly happy with the effort. This is by far my worst race track. So, kind of surprised myself, truthfully.
Chase Briscoe added.
The comments from Briscoe proved one thing, which is Ty Gibbs missed out on a big chance at securing a race win on Sunday. His team had solid car, and he failed to rise to the level as he has been the only driver that gave SVG a genuine challenge in the last few races.
