Chelsea continued with its disappointing run, as the club suffered a shock 3-0 defeat to Brighton in a crucial Premier League encounter. The Blues were outclassed by the Seagulls, despite them keeping almost 70 percent possession throughout the match.

The Blues were coming off the back of a dismal FA Cup fourth round exit to the same opponents, a week ago. Brighton has now defeated Chelsea twice in three matches this season, with the only other match ending in a 4-2 win for the Blues. Enzo Maresca‘s side also lost the opportunity to consolidate their position among the top four of the EPL table.

Brighton went ahead in the 27th minute of their match against the Blues. Kaoru Mitoma sensationally plucked Bart Verbruggen‘s long ball before putting it past Filip Jorgenson. While Chelsea scrambled after Enzo Fernandez‘s equalizer was ruled out, the Seagulls went 2-0 up through Yankuba Minteh‘s goal. The Gambian forward sealed the game with his second goal of the night, in the 63rd minute.

This leaves the Blues win-less in their last five away EPL matches. Moreover, they have picked up just nine points from their last nine top-flight games. Despite having just under 70 percent possession vs. Brighton, Enzo Maresca’s side failed to register a single shot on target, out of the eight they attempted. It also marked their first match since September 2021, without a shot on target.

Nonetheless, the Blues will be hoping to bounce back from their recent setbacks. They next face Aston Villa in a tough EPL encounter, followed by two home games. Meanwhile, Brighton next face relegation-battling Southampton, away from home.

Enzo Maresca slams Chelsea following ‘worst’ display in 3-0 Brighton rout

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca labelled his side’s display against Brighton as the ‘worst’ in his tenure as the Blues manager. The club suffered a humbling 3-0 defeat to their South Coast opponents, with goals coming from Kaoru Mitoma and Yankuba Minteh.

Enzo Maresca has remained under considerable pressure amid Chelsea’s poor form. Speaking after the match, he admitted that it was the team’s worst performance in his seven-month long tenure. He added that it was not the time for the team to suffer a defeat, as they battle to remain in the top four on the EPL table. Moreover, Maresca also apologized to the fans, and noted the absence of a striker.

Probably since I arrived that is the worst performance, especially at the moment we are in… The performance is not one you want to offer so we are very upset and sorry for the fans that were here.

Meanwhile, adding to the Italian manager’s woes, Chelsea will also be without a striker for the next six to eight weeks. Nicolas Jackson, who has scored nine goals this season, has been sidelined with a serious hamstring injury.
