Enzo Maresca‘s Chelsea have found it difficult to churn out results with consistency. Despite picking up an unbelievable 6-2 win against Wolves on matchday 2, the men in blue were held to a 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace at home. Despite an early goal from Nicolas Jackson, Chelsea struggled to create more chances and successfully defend their lead.

Despite bringing in Jadon Sancho from Manchester United, the Englishman watched on from the stands as his side dropped to 11th in the League table. The hosts opened the scoring from a well-worked goal in the 25th minute, finished off by Jackson. The move began when Enzo Fernandez won the ball back near his own penalty area. In a swift counter-attack, Cole Palmer laid the ball off to Jackson who was unmarked at the far post.

After scoring into an unguarded net, the Senegalese forward imitated Olympic sensation Yusuf Dikec‘s iconic celebration. Despite Chelsea‘s best efforts, Palace slowly crawled their way back into the game and was rewarded for their perseverance with an equalizer just eight minutes into the second half.

Eberechi Eze curled in a screamer from outside the box, which hit the inside of the far post and went in. Robert Sanchez diving at full stretch was not enough to keep out the Englishman’s impressive strike.

Enzo Maresca claims team on right path despite ‘avoidable’ draw

Despite signing over nine players in the transfer window, Chelsea’s best moment against Crystal Palace came when Nicolas Jackson imitated Yusuf Dikec’s celebration. Following the game, Maresca claimed that his side are still on the right path. He was, however, critical of his team’s finishing, arguing that his men deserved to win the game if not for the numerous missed chances.

However, fans felt that the manager went a bit overboard when he claimed that the club is not what it used to be. Maresca stated that it was ‘okay’ not to win all the time as supporters expressed their disappointment of the club being so ‘poorly’ run.

After already spending extravagantly on players that many argue were unnecessary, Chelsea have now extended Jackson’s contract to 2033. Chelsea play their next game against Bournemouth after the international break. The club are currently 11th in the Premier League standings.
