Despite spending more than £1 billion on transfers in recent seasons, success has been difficult to come by for the Blues. Even though the club boasted players like Christopher Nkunku, Roméo Lavia, and many others, former boss Mauricio Pochettino could only inspire the team to a sixth-place finish last season.

The Argentine has been sacked ever since and was replaced by Enzo Maresca in early July. Even though initial impressions have been poor, a recent revelation made by the manager has surprised fans on social media. According to the Italian tactician, no one at the club expects him to steer his side to a Champions League spot! In a recent press conference, Maresca himself told reporters that there had been no communication regarding the same.

Nobody said to me, 'Enzo, we need to finish in the first four'. What they said was that we need to step by step, arrive and compete with that.

The club isn’t in great shape heading into the league campaign, having only won one of their six games in pre-season.

Maresca’s first competitive game as Chelsea manager will be against defending champions Manchester City at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

Chelsea eyeing Manchester United man Jadon Sancho in shocking swap deal

Jadon Sancho may have resolved his feud with head coach Erik ten Hag at Manchester United. However, the player was left out of the squad to face Fulham for the league opener on Friday. Even though Ten Hag later clarified that the reason for his exclusion was ‘medical’, it is likely that the Englishman will leave the Red Devils soon. Initial interest from Paris Saint-Germain was strong, although it appears that the Ligue 1 champions have cooled their pursuit of the winger.

In a surprising development, Premier League rivals Chelsea have taken an interest in the player. Even though the Blues recently brought in Pedro Neto, the possibility of Noni Madueke leaving on a permanent deal adds uncertainty to the mix. As per reports, the Blues are preparing a swap deal that will see United gain two of their academy players.

Another option is that Chelsea pick up the player on loan while paying the entirety of his £290,000 per week salary. As things stand, the Blues have enough players to field four separate starting XI’s and will need to ‘get rid of’ a few ahead of the new season.
