Chelsea Football Club find themselves in a difficult spot yet again. The Blues have failed to produce a result yet again as Manchester City eased their way past Todd Boehly‘s £1.2 billion side when the two sides met in the Premier League. Chelsea have now failed to beat City in their last ten meetings and now find themselves in 17th spot after matchday 1.
Chelsea were no match for Pep Guardiola‘s men, as they appeared to take control of the match early on. Erling Haaland fired his side into the lead, as he made his way past Marc Cucurella before chipping the ball into the net. Fans recalled Cucurella making fun of Haaland during Spain’s title celebrations and laughed at how karma put the Spaniard back in his place.
Just as Chelsea tried to fight their way back into the game, up stepped former Chelsea man Mateo Kovacic to make it 2-0. The Croatian ‘jogged’ past both Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez before placing his shot beyond Robert Sanchez‘s reach.
The crowd erupted in cheers as fans stated on social media how a midfield costing £221 million was undone by a man they sold for just £25 million.
Enzo Maresca insists Chelsea are going in the right direction
Chelsea and Enzo Maresca did not have anywhere to hide as Pep Guardiola’s City dismantled their £1.2 billion project in front of their own fans. Following the game, the Italian manager was quizzed about his side’s performance and what takeaways he found from the loss. Building on what Levi Colwill said about himself, Maresca went on about why his side failed to claim a result from the game.
We don't like to lose. The performance was there. We created chances. But at the end of the day, we played against the best team in the world at the moment.Enzo Maresca told NBC Sports
The manager also argued that City were far more clinical than his men. Chelsea managed to find a way back into the game through Nicolas Jackson, but saw the goal ruled out for offside.
Despite the loss, Chelsea do have a few positives to reflect on. To begin with, Maresca was largely impressed with the way his players controlled the game in the second half and also created chances. The manager was convinced that his side were moving in the right direction and would perfect their style of play with time. Following the defeat, Chelsea will now take on Swiss Super League side Servette to qualify for the UEFA Conference League.
