Chelsea skipper Reece James spoke out in defense of his side, following the Blues’ disastrous 3-1 defeat to Manchester City in the Premier League. He was left increasingly frustrated, and pointed to their newly-built struggling squad as a reason for the defeat.
Reece James most recently made his comeback from a hamstring injury, that left him out for the last two months. He has been plagued by several injuries over the past few years. It has limited him to just eight EPL appearances this season. Starting in their recent Premier League defeat to Man City, he played for 74 minutes, before being replaced by Malo Gusto.
Chelsea forward Noni Madueke did get his team off to a good start inside three minutes, capitalizing on an error made by Abdukodir Khusanov. However, City made a brilliant comeback, thanks to goals from Josko Gvardiol, Erling Haaland and Phil Foden. The defeat means that the Blues have now won just one out of their last seven EPL encounters. They have dropped to the sixth position on the league table.

Speaking after the match, captain Reece James expressed frustration, while stating that his team missed chances. However, he claimed that the Blues have been making progress this season. He stated that Chelsea is a team with a new manager, together only for a year, while City are comparatively stronger and have been together for seven years. James added that Chelsea are approaching it one match at a time.
Nonetheless, Chelsea will be hoping to bounce back when they next face West Ham United in a crucial EPL encounter. This will be followed by two back-to-back matches against Brighton, in the FA Cup and the Premier League.
Robert Sanchez could be dropped by Enzo Maresca, following disastrous Chelsea displays
Chelsea keeper Robert Sanchez could be dropped from the squad, after a series of erroneous displays for the club in back-to-back EPL encounters. The 27-year-old shot-stopper has also been criticized by fans for his recent performances.
Against Manchester City, Sanchez’s error led to the Blues conceding their second goal. He rushed out of his area into the no man’s land, resulting in Erling Haaland capitalizing on the situation. It followed the Spanish keeper spilling a catch against Wolverhampton a week ago. This has led to manager Enzo Maresca losing trust in his first-choice keeper, as he risks missing out on the next matches.

Chelsea have three other backup goalkeeping options. This includes summer signing Filip Jorgensen, who was brought in from LaLiga side Villarreal. Apart from the Danish starlet, Lucas Bergstrom and Marcus Bettinelli are the other keepers.
