Chelsea had a major setback after suffering crushing defeat against Manchester City in the Premier League. Despite Noni Madueke scoring the opener, Josko Gvardiol, Erling Haaland and Phil Foden’s strikes set the tone right for the Cityzens. Chelsea skipper, Reece James, wasn’t happy with the overall performance as the Blues dropped to the sixth position after just one win from the last five games.

Reece James lamented the missed opportunities earlier on when they had the lead. However, when asked about the strength of Manchester City in the post-match press conference, James highlighted the time difference between the two sides. The captain said that the Cityzens have built this unit for seven years while Chelsea has only started.

If you look at it, we’ve been together less than a year and they’ve been together for seven years maybe – they’ve had a lot longer to work with the manager and the team. We’re still building and we hope to put things right. We need to take it one game at a time and see where we are at the end of the season.

There were major questions about the performance of Robert Sanchez under the sticks while Chelsea failed to put up a unified show up front. It hasn’t been a great run for the Blues in recent times. After a solid start to the League, they have lost momentum.

In the game prior to that against City, they drew with Bournemouth. Another draw against Crystal Palace didn’t help their cause either. To make matters worse, in the last week of December, they suffered two consecutive defeats against Ipswich Town and Fulham.

Chelsea boss cautions Robert Sanchez in a stern tone

Robert Sanchez’s performance was a cause of concern for Chelsea in their clash against Manchester City. The goalkeeper made a major error coming out to defend the ball when Erling Haaland beautifully chipped the ball to score. With that error, Chelsea fell behind and eventually lost the game.

Chelsea boss, Enzo Maresca, didn’t shy away from talking about the mistakes of his goalkeeper. So far, in 21 games, Sanchez has only kept 4 clean sheets. This is concerning for a side that had title aspirations a few weeks ago. As such, Maresca gave a positive outlook on the goalkeeping mishap.

Robert, for sure, he is completely aware that he has to do better. He was completely aware after the game – he knows perfectly. In this moment, it is like this. The good thing is that he is the first one, knowing and aware that he has to do better.

Enzo Maresca said in the post-match presser

Chelsea will take on West Ham United in the upcoming Premier League clash with the hope of staying afloat in the top four. A lot will depend on how the team bounces back from what has been an extremely lean patch for the Blues in the Premier League. It is going to be a stern test for Enzo Maresca despite the phenomenal overture.
