Premier League: Chelsea vs Crystal Palace Player Ratings as the Blues start with a London Derby win
Chelsea vs Crystal Palace
Chelsea kicked off their Premier League 2021-22 campaign with a dominating 3-0 win over Crystal Palace at the Stamford Bridge in London on Saturday. The Blues were on top form throughout the game and never looked like a side against which Palace could score.
Tomas Tuchel’s side went into the lead with a trademark free-kick from Marcos Alonso before Christian Pulisic doubled the lead with a header, scoring five goals in five matches against Crystal Palace. Trevor Chalobah fired in a belter of shots from 30 yards out to score his first goal for Chelsea in his Premier League debut as Chelsea outclassed Palace, 3-0.
Let us dive right into the player ratings of both the clubs without further ado.
Chelsea
Edouard Mendy (GK) (7/10): Mendy just had a single save to make throughout the entire game and was comfortable between the sticks.
Antonio Rudiger (8/10): Rudiger was on top form throughout the 90 minutes and blocked a certain Wilfried Zaha shot in the second half which could have turned the game on its head.
Andreas Christensen (8/10): Christensen was a rock at the back for Chelsea and never allowed Crystal Palace to dominate the proceedings.
Trevoh Chalobah (9/10): The youngster scored the very first goal in his very first start for Chelsea in the Premier League. He was dominant at the back and made some quality crosses inside the box as well.
Marcos Alonso (9/10): Alonso was in the form of his life and scored a brilliant free-kick to open the floodgates at Stamford Bridge. He constantly created problems for the Crystal Palace defence.
Mateo Kovacic (7/10): Kovacic did most of the dirty work in the midfield and kept Crystal Palace at bay.
Jorginho (8/10): Jorginho was a midfield marshall for the Blues. He created a decent number of openings for his side.
Cesar Azpilicueta © (8/10): The Captain had a comfortable outing down the right side and was on the top of his game.
Mason Mount (8/10): Mount kept the Crystal Palace defence on the back foot throughout the game with his impeccable crossing and free-kick abilities.
Christian Pulisic (8/10): The American headed in the second goal of the game and posed a towering presence throughout the 90 minutes inside the Crystal Palace box.
Timo Werner (6/10): The German forward was mostly isolated upfront and did not get much of a ball to make use of.
Substitutes
Reece James (6/10): James replaced Azpilicueta but was actually not the best choice of replacement. He struggled to grow into the game and the right flank got weaker as the game progressed.
Kai Havertz (NA)
Emerson Palmieiri (NA)
Crystal Palace
Vicente Guiata (GK) (5/10): Gulata had a game to forget. He conceded three goals and was responsible for the second goal of the game due to poor positioning.
Joel Ward (5/10): Joel Ward was comprehensively outplayed by the likes of Antonio Rudiger and Marcos Alonso on the right side.
Cheikhou Kouyate (6/10): Kouyate struggled to keep up with the pace of the likes of Pulisic and Mount.
Marc Guehi (6/10): Guehi partnered Kouyate at the central defence and has a similar fate in terms of challenging the quick Chelsea playmakers.
Tyrick Mitchell (6/10): Mitchell was absolutely pinned in the left side under the domination of Chalobah and Azpilicueta.
Jordan Ayew (5/10): Ayew failed to produce the goods in the midfield except for that one defence-splitting pass to Zaha.
Jairo Riedewald (6/10): Riedewald was second best while going to most aerial and grounded duels.
James McArthur © (7/10): The captain was arguably the best Palace name on the pitch. He won a majority of duels in the midfield and created space for his compatriots.
Jeffrey Schupp (6/10): Schupp struggled to get going in the entire game and was not at his best courtesy of the presence of Azpilicueta on his tail.
Wilfried Zaha (5/10): Zaha had a golden opportunity to score for Palace but the lack of confidence showed as he mistimed his shot and was under par throughout the 90 minutes.
Jean-Philippe Mateta (6/10): Mateta tracked back to help his side help in defence but was wasteful up front.
Substitutes
Joachim Andersen (6/10): Andersen replaced Schupp in the left midfield but did not show any major reason to be rated higher than his predecessor.
Christian Benteke (7/10): Benteke did push the Chelsea defenders on the back foot in the final few minutes of the game due to his physicality but did not have much of an impact.
