Chelsea are looking for central defender options to strengthen their squad. They have scoured the winter transfer market for some options. Graeme Bailey on TBR Football reports that Chelsea have displayed their intentions to bring back English defender Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace in the ongoing winter transfer window.
Guehi moved to Crystal Palace from Stamford Bridge in the 2021 summer transfer window. Palace had to pay a fee of around £18 million. He has grown on to become one of the best defenders in England. He was not used as the first choice in the playing XI at Chelsea. Hence, Guehi wanted to move to a different place to grow in his career and get regular playtime.
The 24-year-old defender has since then played a regular part in the first-team football of Crystal Palace. His performances at the club has helped him make his position permanent in the playing XI of the English football team. Guehi has been solid for Palace so far in his tenure and has also scored seven goals with three assists to his name.
The English player’s performances have attracted the attention of many top clubs in the Premier League. Newcastle United was one of the clubs that were interested in him. Recently, Arne Slot has also revealed his intention of bringing him to Anfield. However, now Bailey has reported that the Stamford Bridge club wants to re-sign the defender.
Why does Chelsea want to sign Marc Guehi?
Few defenders have left Stamford Bridge in the recent transfer windows. So, it is not surprising that Enzo Marseca wants to sign a new central defender. They have been looking for good options in the ongoing winter transfer window. Hence, they have kept tabs on some of the best centre-backs in the transfer market.
Marseca has also looked for other options in the transfer market to strengthen their centre-back position. However, Guehi has become the main option for Marseca’s side. Palace, meanwhile, does not like to sell of any player in the middle of the season, and Guehi has been one of their most important players.
Marc Guehi excels in ground and aerial duels. He is an impressive ball-playing defender, with leadership qualities, and remains composed under pressure. The player is physical and is aware of the manager’s tactics, which will make him an asset to Chelsea. Guehi has conceded 27 goals and kept four clean sheets in 19 matches in the Premier League 2024/2025 season.
Chelsea will try their level best to bring back Guehi in the ongoing winter transfer window. They have dropped points in the EPL and will want a strong defense to avoid any more slips. It remains to be seen if the Blues can get their wish fulfilled before the ongoing winter transfer window ends.
