The Oklahoma City Thunder witnessed their best season in franchise history this past 2024-25 NBA campaign. The Thunder won the NBA title for the first time in their franchise history (if you remove the Seattle SuperSonics’ history), led by core players like Shai-Gilgeous Alexander, Jalen Williams, Lu Dort, and Chet Holmgren. Notably, Holmgren has been making headlines for different reasons.

It was quite obvious that once the season concluded, the Thunder would be looking to safeguard their assets. That’s exactly what they did. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, Thunder center Chet Holmgren is not planning to leave Oklahoma anytime soon, as he has inked a 5-Year maximum rookie contract as per his agent, Bill Duffy of WME Basketball.

In 32 regular-season games, Holmgren produced 15.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 2.2 blocks per match, establishing his presence on the Thunder side this season. He made 37.9% of his long-range attempts and shot an efficient 49.0% from the field, showcasing his versatility. Despite all this, fans are not sold on the numbers of the contract extension, deeming it too much for a player of Holmgren’s caliber.

Holmgren did not disappoint his fans in the playoffs, posting great stats of 15.2 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks per contest. His presence in the paint, floor spacing, and shot-changing skills were essential to OKC’s push for the championship. The Thunder center will make $13.7 million this season, the final year of his rookie deal, before his pay jumps to almost $41 million in 2026-2027 and the start of the extension.

To add to this, the Thunder are not stopping here. Having already extended SGA and Holmgren’s contract’s they are not moving onto Jalen Williams’ contract extension, as per reports. It will be interesting to watch how the Thunder defend their title going into the 2025-26 NBA season.

Fans left shocked after coming across Chet Holmgren’s contract extension news

As a Thunder fan, many wanted their star players to be kept intact by the franchise, and that’s what they are doing. However, the numbers involved to keep them on the roster are leaving many stunned, especially Chet Holmgren’s contract numbers. After coming across the Holmgren contract extension news, many fans were left stunned.

The majority of the fans took to various social media apps and sites to put forward their views on the matter. Many fans claimed that the Thunder are overpaying Holmgren to secure his services for their side. One fan wrote on X, “That is a lot of money brother.” Check out some of the fan reactions below:

Moreover, it was the Thunder star’s mentality and resilience that earned him a contract extension. It’s important to note that Holmgren was injured throughout major portions of the season. One of the stories that seemed to resonate with Thunder general manager Sam Presti the most throughout the championship run was how Holmgren recovered from the injury.

Thunder eyeing major Jalen Williams move after securing Chet Holmgren’s contract

As mentioned above, the Thunder don’t seem to stop. After securing Holmgren and SGA, they are now onto Jalen Williams. ESPN’s Shams Charania said that the Thunder are now preparing to offer Williams a long-term, high-paying contract extension of his own.

Williams has been performing brilliantly for the Thunder, with the management keeping a clear eye on him. He was all over the court for the NBA champions this season, posting 21.6 points, 5.3 rebounds, 5.1 assists, 1.6 steals, and 1.8 three-pointers. In addition to being chosen for the All-NBA third team and the All-Defense second team, he was an All-Star.

Even though the new CBA makes it more difficult for organizations to retain three players with maximum salary, the Thunder can afford to take this chance because they have a young roster and several seniors on team-friendly contracts. It remains to be seen how the Thunder proceed in the offseason in the coming days ahead of the new NBA season.
