Reporters bombarded Andy Reid with questions about Justin Tucker after the Kansas City Chiefs signed the controversial kicker to keep Harrison Butker on his toes. Reid tried his best to justify the Chiefs’ reasons for signing Tucker.

Tucker spent 13 seasons kicking for the Baltimore Ravens. At one point, analysts and fans considered the Super Bowl winner the best kicker in the league.

His form gradually deteriorated after the 2022 season. He missed 13 field goals in the next two seasons before the Ravens cut him. However, his form wasn’t the only reason Tucker lost his place on the team.

In January 2025, the Baltimore Banner published firsthand testimonies from six massage therapists accusing Tucker of inappropriate behavior from 2012 to 2016. In the expose, the women alleged that Tucker, 36, intentionally exposed his genitals and engaged in sexual acts on the massage table.

Tucker’s attorney denied all the allegations. In June, the NFL suspended Tucker for ten weeks and the kicker didn’t challenge the decision. After not seeing the field, the Ravens parted ways with him. They replaced Tucker with Tyler Loop.

Even though Tucker tried his best to return to the league, no team wanted him until Wednesday, October 28, when NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Kansas City Star’s Sam McDowell announced the Chiefs had signed the 7x Pro Bowler to their practice squad.

Hours after Tucker’s signing became national news, reporters flocked to the Chiefs media room for answers. One question Reid faced was whether Tucker’s presence would affect the organization’s ties with female audiences.

He’s done his suspension. Took care of that business there. I’ll leave it at that for you… We try to do our homework the best way we possibly can. Talked to a lot of people to make sure things are okay.

Andy Reid said in his reply

Why did the Chiefs sign Justin Tucker?

Harrison Butker has been the Chiefs’ designated kicker since 2017. Butker set the record for most field goals scored (38) in his rookie year. In 2019, he led the league in points scored (147).

However, the former seventh-round pick has been hit-or-miss in the last few years. He has already missed 10 field goals and 5 extra points in the first six games this year. He missed two—from 58 yards and 45 yards—in last Sunday’s defeat to the Seattle Seahawks.

Despite the apparent decline in form, Reid stuck by Butker at the post-game presser and praised him. Butker also spoke about his experience in the NFL.

I try to take one kick at a time. I’m blessed every opportunity I get and try to do my best. It’s kind of the life of a kicker — it either goes in or it doesn’t. And unfortunately, there’s been some kicks that haven’t gone in.

Butker said (H/T US Magazine)

Kicking has become a key part of the modern game. These days, players like Cam Little (the Jaguars) and Brandon Aubrey (the Cowboys) are consistently striking field goals from 60+ yards. At the NFL’s Brazil game, Ravens second-year kicker Tyler Loop scored a 56-yard field goal to defeat the Cowboys.

Keeping that in mind, the Chiefs tried out three kickers, including Justin Tucker and the veteran won the bout. According to Reid, he could start against the Denver Broncos in Week 7.

KC won the reverse fixture on opening day. Butker was one of one that day. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes completed 15 of 27 passes for 184 yards, 2 touchdowns, and one interception.

Running back Kenneth Walker rushed 23 times for 173 yards and one touchdown. Travis Kelce caught 3 passes for 71 yards. It finished 31-10.
