As the Kansas City Chiefs gear up for their ultimate goal of a three-peat, they added another strong offensive weapon on the roster, but as the backup to their elite quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Despite having a Super Bowl, MVP candidate of one time, and Pro Bowl on the resume, Carson Wentz is embracing his new role as backup quarterback with utmost dedication.
This offseason, the Chiefs made many splashy moves to strengthen the team and not repeat the mistakes of last season. One of those was acquiring veteran Wentz as a backup to Mahomes. When asked Wentz how is he adjusting to his new role in Kansas City, he revealed his mindset of becoming a valuable player regardless of what position he plays in.
The former Los Angeles Rams quarterback also emphasized the importance of him of supporting Mahomes, while he is giving his best to the team.
Pat and I already have a great relationship that’ll keep growing, and we’ll keep finding ways that I can help--The dude has been playing at an extremely high level for a while, so I’ll try to find a way to help in whatever way I can, whether that’s off the field, on the field, or whatever. I’m just here to help and support.Carson Wentz said per Arrowhead Pride
The quarterback has joined the clan of Chiefs in a one-year deal with a base salary of $3.325 million, including $2.2 million fully guaranteed. This is his fourth team since his departure from the Philadelphia Eagles.
Carson Wentz embraces backup role with optimism
While talking on the subject, Wentz also opened up about his transition to backup and how he has been coping with the change with a fresh and positive mindset. He shared that he is approaching the new role “to be ready” and learning the new offensive system and playing technique.
You got to always be ready to go when called upon. So, that’s no different in that regard, but you go out to practice, and you’re with the twos, or you’re going scout team, that’s different. But I’m just trying to get better and take it one day at a time.Carson Wentz added
Wentz particularly praised the three-time Super Bowl champion for the command of football he possesses. He expressed being impressed by Mahomes for how he always reveals new angles and opportunities to his teammates, which Wentz himself often misses out on.
