A bad day at the office for Hollywood Brown, who injured himself in his debut Kansas City Chiefs game. He was carted away into the medical tent for further evaluation.

On Saturday, the Chiefs played their first preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Florida. Head coach Andy Reid gave new recruits Hollywood Brown and rookie Xavier Worthy to start the game.

Reid wanted them to get the feel of playing as a Chiefs player from the start and evaluate their progress for the final 53-man roster for the regular season. However, Brown’s afternoon met a premature end on the first drive.

The Jaguars blitz put pressure on quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who saw an open Brown near the 40-yard mark and threw him the ball. The 27-year-old caught the pass, but the Jaguars’ corner Montaric Brown tackled him from behind.

The replays showed Brown landing awkwardly on his shoulder and later the medical team taking him away for further check-up. A video of the tackle was later released on X (previously known as Twitter). Brown did not rejoin the game.

Later, SI’s Jordan Foote spoke with Andy Reid, who revealed that Brown suffered a sternoclavicular joint dislocation, which he compared to Tyreek Hill‘s injury from 2019.

[Tyreek Hill] had a sternoclavicular joint injury which is where your clavicle comes into your sternum. Those can be injured coming out the front, up top or in the back. If it goes posteriorly or back then it becomes a medical issue.

Hollywood Brown is an important part of the Chiefs’ offense

Following the 2023 season, in which the Chiefs receivers recorded the most dropped catches in the league, they brought in Brown as an additional competition for players like Mecole Hardman, Kadarius Toney, and Justyn Ross. His experience playing on a couple of different rosters made him the perfect man for the job.

He impressed both coach Reid and Mahomes during the offseason with his pace and sharp reception skills.

He's done a great job. It's hard to learn this offense, and I feel like he's done a great job picking it up very fast. And then, obviously, you see the ability.
Patrick Mahomes said per Sports Illustrated

The three time Super Bowl winner added that Brown’s presence in the team will take some of the pressure off star tight end Travis Kelce, who was the Chiefs’ best receiver last year with 93 receptions for 984 yards and 5 touchdowns.

As a coach, you look for the communication part. Are they willing to share what they're thinking with one another? And they've got a good connection.

Unfortunately, Brown could miss out the entire season because of the severity of the injury. So, the load would then fall on the likes of Rice and Toney, with Worthy chipping in when required.

Last season, Hollywood Brown was part of the Arizona Cardinals team. He started 14 games, caught 51 passes for 574 yards and 4 touchdowns.
