On Thursday night, when the Kansas City Chiefs faced off against the Chicago Bears in their final pre-season game, general manager Brett Veach announced that they were in talks with center Creed Humphrey for an extension.
The talks were still ongoing when the game began. Sure enough, Humphrey signed a four-year, $72 million extension, making him the highest-paid center in the NFL.
We’ve had a lot of good dialogue, and I’m pretty sure we will put pen to paper soon. Needless to say, we’re extremely excited to continue Creed’s career here. He’s been great for our organization.Brett Veach said per News8
ESPN’s Adam Schefter confirmed the news on X (previously Twitter).
Chiefs and Pro Bowl center Creed Humphrey reached agreement on a four-year, $72 million extension, including $50 million guaranteed. Humphrey now becomes the highest-paid center in NFL history. Deal negotiated by Ken Sarnoff and Andy Simms of 1 of 1 Agency,.Adam Schefter wrote

Football fans on social media reacted to Creed Humphrey’s record-breaking deal with the Kansas City Chiefs
Humphrey’s new deal is a testament to how good he has been for the Chiefs since they drafted him in the second round back in 2021. Since his debut, the 25-year-old hasn’t missed a single game in his NFL career (51), went to the Pro Bowl for consecutive years, and lifted two Super Bowls shielding Patrick Mahomes.
Over the course of the deal, Humphrey will earn $18 million annually, surpassing retired Eagles center Jason Kelce. He also went past the current crop of players in the league—the New Orleans Saints agreed to a five-year, $60 million deal with Erik McCoy ($12 million) and Detroit Lions’ Frank Ragnow to a four-year, $54 million deal ($13.8 million annually).
Wow. That's an APY of $18m a year. The next highest center contract (Frank Ragnow) has an APY of $13.5m. That's a $4.5m difference. https://t.co/bQGaIeIN1I pic.twitter.com/8OIpSad8mk

Before Super Bowl LVIII, Humphrey spoke highly about playing for the Chiefs and guarding Patrick Mahomes.
Playing with Patrick has been a complete blessing. It’s not every day you get to say you’re blocking for a guy that’s won a Super Bowl, won MVP, or things like that in his career, especially in such a short career.Creed Humphrey said per Sports Illustrated
Humphrey did not appear in any of the Chiefs three losses in the preseason. However, Chiefs fans can certainly believe that his name will be one of the first on the roster when they face the Baltimore Ravens in week 1 of the 2024 regular season at Arrowhead.
