The Kansas City Chiefs finally made the much-awaited splash in the running back department on Monday. Brett Veach and crew secured the services of not just anyone, but the Super Bowl LX MVP, Kenneth Walker III.

Walker’s contract was due to run its course as the Seattle Seahawks did not show much interest in making him one of the highest-paid rushers in football. With Zach Charbonnet, Cam Akers, and George Holani ready to step up if required, Seattle did not feel the need to keep Walker around.

So the Seahawks allowed Walker to enter free agency. The Chiefs signed the 25-year-old to a three-year, $45 million deal, with a base salary of $14.35 million per year and $28.7 million fully guaranteed.

Social media buzzed with reactions to the Chiefs’ signing of running back Kenneth Walker

The Chiefs had been yearning for a big-name running back to back up quarterback Patrick Mahomes for years. Kareem Hunt and Isiah Pacheco have played their roles commendably over the years, right up until the last campaign.

That said, Mahomes has never had a 1000-yard rusher, even during the three Super Bowl-winning seasons. Hunt last reached that milestone when Alex Smith was the starting quarterback. With Hunt likely to enter free agency and Pacheco expected to join him, Kansas City needed a dependable and experienced player to step in as the new leader in the backfield.

Walker, or K9, as most likely to call him, shared game time with Charbonnet in 2025. After Charbonnet picked up an injury, Seattle made Walker RB1, and he took full advantage of the opportunity. He rushed 221 times for 1027 yards (the second 1000-yard campaign of his career) and scored 5 touchdowns. Additionally, he caught 31 passes for 282 yards and scored one TD.

Seattle faced the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LX. Walker racked up 27 carries for 135 yards, along with catching 2 passes for 26 yards in a 29-13 victory. Walker was named the best player of the game, becoming the first running back to win the prestigious trophy since Terrell Davis in 1998. No wonder, social media was surprised by Seahawks letting Walker go to Chiefs.

Pat McAfee of ESPN highlighted a key factor in the Chiefs landing Walker. Sources told McAfee that Walker parted ways with his former agent before the Super Bowl, and his new agency helped him build a good relationship with the Chiefs.

Mahomes was one of the first to respond to the Chiefs’ signing of Walker.

The Chiefs also re-signed Travis Kelce. The All-Pro tight end will play his 14th year in KC.
