- Kansas City Chiefs are awaiting Travis Kelce's decision on his future with the team.
- GM Brett Veach expressed readiness for either outcome regarding Kelce's potential retirement.
- The Chiefs aim to rebuild their roster to support both Kelce and Patrick Mahomes for a Super Bowl run.
With every passing day, Kansas City Chiefs fans and the rest of the football world are eager to know whether superstar tight end Travis Kelce wants to come back for another go-around.
He will turn 37 a month into the 2026 season, which is quite an age for any NFL athlete. On top of that, his advancing age has also seen him lose some of the explosiveness that defined his career.
Despite that, the Ohio native was productive enough to garner 851 yards last season. When factoring in Patrick Mahomes‘ Week 15 ACL tear, that number looks impressive.
Add the fact that he could only manage 54 yards in the final three games receiving passes from the Chiefs’ third and fourth-string QBs, and it should be enough for analysts to think that Travis Kelce can still perform at the highest level.
I think we’ve kinda prepared for either scenario… Travis is the best. He’s an icon, and hopefully he comes back, and we’re just gonna let that process play out.
Brett Veach said
This was Chiefs GM Brett Veach speaking at the NFL Draft Combine. His words echoed what head coach Andy Reid said a couple of days ago. His answer is clear that the Chiefs want their tight end back.

Even though some are not convinced and believe that the Chiefs should move on from Travis Kelce to a younger, more athletic tight end, the franchise wants to stick with their future Hall of Famer.
Brett Veach focused on building Super Bowl-winning team for Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes
In his answer, Brett Veach made it clear that he and the Kansas City Chiefs are prepared for any outcome of their discussions with Travis Kelce. If he decides to end his career and proceed to focus on his future life with Taylor Swift, they will be supportive.

The last three years, we were kinda just like in a maintenance stage, and now we’re trying to rebuild this thing again. I think for a GM and a personnel staff, that’s exciting.
Brett Veach said
Veach said this, keeping in mind that there is a big chance the superstar pass catcher could return for one last ride. If he does, then the GM and his staff would want to build a team capable of winning a Super Bowl.

As he admitted, the last three years, they were just making evolutionary changes. After their debacle last season, the franchise has been forced to rethink its ways, and it now has to rebuild the roster into one that can compete with the best.
If Brett Veach can build a team that can hunt for another Vince Lombardi trophy, it would be the perfect sendoff for Travis Kelce. If not, at least they will place the building blocks for future success.
Brett Veach focused on improving the run game
Veach has a monumental task on his hands. On one hand, he has to consider the fact that Travis Kelce could return, especially if he believes the 2026 edition of the Chiefs could win a Super Bowl.
That means the GM has to build a team through the draft and free agency, keeping that in mind. However, when asked what areas he wants to focus on more, the 48-year-old said something that would benefit Patrick Mahomes.
I think if we can be more explosive and more effective in the running game, obviously, it would take a lot of pressure off Pat, especially coming back early in the season with the injury.
Brett Veach said
Last season, Kareem Hunt and Isiah Pacheco combined for 1073 total yards. That is simply not good enough if the Chiefs want to take the pressure off their superstar quarterback.

Once Veach manages to bring in solutions, it would allow Mahomes to find his receivers better. That could be the best way to give the offense a major boost.
