The Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver core continues their streak of getting into legal trouble. This time, rookie Xavier Worthy was arrested on Friday night after an attempt to assault one of his family members. The wideout was arrested in Williamson County, Texas and after his arrest, he was charged with third-degree felony assault against a family or household member by impeding their breath or circulation.

The charge has been defined as being “intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly impeding the normal breathing or circulation of the blood of the person by applying pressure to the person’s throat or neck or by blocking the person’s nose or mouth.” It is not clear who the victim is in this case.

The charges levied against Worthy are punishable by a sentence of two to 10 years and may be accompanied by a fine of up to $10,000. The news can be disastrous to the rookie wide receiver who capped off an impressive year with two touchdowns in the Super Bowl. Despite the Chiefs’ loss to the Eagles, he proved that he can be relied upon in the big moments.

The Kansas City Chiefs are yet to release a detailed statement

The incident can have a disastrous impact on his career; that is if he is found guilty. Xavier Worthy’s actions are under scrutiny by the Chiefs but the team is allowing the legal investigation and procedure to take its course. “We are aware and gathering information,” the team said in its statement. They are attempting to gain a full picture of the incident before they decide what to do.

Xavier Worthy, a California native is the fifth Chiefs’ player in two years to be arrested. Last year, two of the team’s players were arrested over possession of marijuana but were eventually released and the charges against them were dropped.

The more concerning arrest has been of Rashee Rice who got into a car crash while racing on a highway in Dallas. Subsequently, he was accused of assaulting a photographer at a nightclub but the victim did not press charges against him.

The other player to face legal troubles was DL Isaiah Buggs who was arrested on burglary and domestic violence charges. He was sentenced to hard labor post-conviction on two counts of misdemeanor animal cruelty charges and then released by the Chiefs.

Xavier Worthy made a name for himself early on before joining the Chiefs. He ran a 4.21-second 40-yard dash that broke the NFL Combine record. His addition served as a boon to Patrick Mahomes as the quarterback struggled to find competent receivers. Worthy ended the regular season with 59 passes for 638 yards and 6 touchdowns.
