Xinyu Wang registered her career-best result by beating Jessica Pegula in the second round at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships, adding to the list of upsets the tournament has already seen. In her third main draw appearance in London, she posted her best result so far.

Former American No. 1 Pegula arrived in London to play in her first Major since recovering from a rib injury that forced her to skip the European clay season. Heading into Wimbledon, the American made a strong comeback in Berlin and carried that form to the Championships, only to lose in the second round.

It was a tough match for Pegula, who struggled from the start. She was put under pressure as Wang got a timely break to win the first set. The American bounced back by the smallest of margins, leveling the scores by not buckling under pressure in the tie-break. However, she failed to keep to momentum going and ended up losing 4-6, 7-6(7),1-6. While it was a tough loss for the 30-year-old, it was Wang’s first win against a Top-10 player.

It was the latest upset at SW19 but not the biggest after defending champion Marketa Vondrousova was beaten on the opening day.

A couple of days ago I was asking my coach when can this happen. It was a great match. I had a lot of fun. Enjoyed playing here also. Jessica was really tough to play on grass, her balls were really low and I am really happy that I won.

Xinyu Wang said in the post-match interview

Wang will next face Nottingham champion Katie Boulter, who came from a set down to beat Harriet Dart 4-6, 6-1, 7-6(8).
