Chinese swimmers competing in the Paris Olympics will undergo at least eight drug tests before the event after the World Aquatics announced the same. The testing will be carried out by the International Testing Agency. These tests will be conducted alongside the athletes’ own national anti-doping agency (NADO) testing.

The ITA will guarantee that samples are collected by a Sample Collection Authority other than the Chinese Anti-Doping Agency (CHINADA) and analyzed in labs outside of China. This approach is intended to improve the integrity of the testing process. World Aquatics will publish the results of these tests before the Olympic opening ceremony.

A certain number of other athletes, including Chinese athletes taking part in the Paris Olympic Games, will be tested by the ITA no less than 8 times during this same period. The ITA will use its best efforts to have all such tests of Chinese athletes conducted by a Sample Collection Authority other than CHINADA, and to have the samples analysed by laboratories outside of China.
ITA said in a statement

The announcement comes in the light of 11 Chinese athletes who tested positive for a prohibited cardiac drug before the Tokyo Olympics back in 2021. These sportsmen escaped suspensions and earned three gold medals. In 2021, a Chinese state-backed inquiry blamed major food poisoning in a hotel kitchen, but there was no evidence to back up the claim.

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has been criticized for accepting this explanation. A WADA-appointed prosecutor in Switzerland cleared the agency of bias toward China in a report. World Aquatics has also appointed a panel to study how it handled the case three years ago. The panel’s report includes recommendations for more anti-doping tests for athletes from certain countries, especially China.
